Default Nose Wheel Pushrod Bends Instead of Wheel Turning

Hi - I am building an ARF Hobbico Superstar 40. I have set up the servos as shown in the manual, however when I turn the rudder the nose wheel does not turn. I CAN turn the nose wheel manually and it is free and not snagged up in anything. When I use the servo to turn the wheel, the push rod just bends. How do you fix this?

I was thinking of attaching a block of wood to a bulkhead in order to straighten the path of the pushrod. Would this help? The problem is that the left side of the plane is already slightly heavier than the right and the block would have to go on the left side to straighten the path, thereby making my balancing problem worse...
