Then I guess you add some wood to the center of the wing to support them?

When you get that far along, I'd love to see how. I know other planes have a chunk of solid balsa there, but on those models I've done, there is wing sheeting to help hold it in place.

Though, while I had my doubts, the single dowel does seem VERY strong.
