Well, the weather here kinda sucked again yesterday, but I got in one maiden flight on the stick. Sorry, I didn't bring a camera.
It wanted to climb like crazy, but otherwise flew perfectly straight. A little down trim fixed that though. Elevator was a bit touchy. I'm gonna take the advice of a fellow club member and try it with expo next time. (Hope the weather improves next week!)
I was afraid to try landing with the flaperon's down on the first flight, but they seemed fine up high. It just settled forward on the stall.

Nergall, glad that the maiden went well. You could do a check to make sure that the cg is not too far back. I use 30% expo on my controls (JR radio). I also have a small amount of aileron differential. I found that I had to increase the aileron travel and decrease the elevator travel to get the controls balanced to my satisfaction. Went to the flying field this morning and came home again....too windy! Never mind a better day will come.

All the best....Chris UK.

It was probably too windy that day as well, but Ihad to get that flight in. I had already waited an extra week!
CG is right on the Spar. It's probably as far back as it should be, but other than wanting to climb, it felt fine.
I once flew a park flyer about a 1/4 inch too tail heavy, and the tail would drag around the turn. I didn't notice that at all on the stick. The park flyer was balanced on the spar as well. After that flight, Ilooked closer and found it was supposed to balance on the front edge of the spar. Amazing what a difference that little bit made in that small plane. Ihad to hold full down elevator the whole flight.
Stick took about 2-3 clicks of down trim and was fine.
I'll try out 30% expo before moving the clevis out. Thanks for the tip. Itried to setup the aileron differential by offseting the control arm slightly. Anyway, they seemed ideal. They are just a little slower than the 4*60. (Mind you, I'm not practicing the pattern yet, so Imay get pickier later on.)

Been out flying this thing like crazy the last two weeks. Sorry, no video - too busy flying it!
Last week Ithink I got reversed on the flaperon setup though. With the flaperons down, it needs a bit of extra up trim. So, I took off and the plane immediately starts heading back to the ground!
Some else at the field - a very, very good pilot -had just dumped his ARF stick because it was way out of trim in the same direction, so I was really freaked out! I managed to figure things out without hitting anything though, and by the end of the day, Ihad figured out what I did wrong.
Thisweekend yet another club member was out with his Great Planes Ugly Stick ARF. Mine looks like an evilbrother to his. We've been chasing each other round the sky all weekend and having a blast.
Ithink Ihave a handle on the flaperons now. Ican definitely land better with them on, but they have their own issues.
1. I think partly because the ailerons go all the way out to the end of the wing, the plane can get very touchy as it approaches stall speed with the flaperons down. Up high, it seems safe from a snap tip stall. It just settles like a trainer. However, near the runway, it's hard to control. I end up bouncy the wings from side to side a bit before giving up, turning the flaps off, and giving it lots of throttle.
2. As Isaid, you have to hold a bit of up trim when they're down. This seemed backwards to me? I guess if I had a more expensive radio, Icould just program the trim onto the flaperon switch and be fine.
3. However, if you give it a little more power, you do end up going slower! And, if you keep the speed up above the touchy point, it'll land real sweet with them down.
So far, the plane only has one small scuff on the wing tip from a taxi error. Ihad been trying to move up to a Four Star 60. That's a great plane, but I think it was too much for my skills. This Stick is perfect! Ihighly recommend it, whether you build one, buy the GPARF, or even buy an Ultra Stick.

Hey mate,
I'm in Australia and did I hear you correct when you said you had some plans for that bad boy? And if you did, I'd be happy to pay for a copy and the postage to my address in Australia.
Thanks.

I am building an Ugly Stick from plans I got here:
http://www.profili2.com/eng/plans.asp
Just type "ugly stick' in the bottom left search box.
Here's my build thread. The plans are not as good as ones you might pay for, but if you like to figure stuff out on your own, they are OK.

Good luck

Uncle willies mod. of the jenson plans were the best(.Lazer-works.comhas short kit basedfrom these plans.I sent them 2yrs. ago. Go to L.W. and you will see that plane and a94" Tele master I built.)He removed the dihedral, I built this plane and others like it as a T.D. Nergall use vert. grain sheer all the way leading edge spar, half way trailing edge spar cover well. I did not use the dowel pin and #64 band setup. 2 dowels in center L.E. and nylon 1/4-20 bolts in rear. I've tried taken pics while I build, I get lost in the build and forget all about ths camera. So I will be startin a 106" Hobby Shack ugly stick and into the wonderfull world of gas.

Another club member posted some video of the stick flying:

(Only worked in HD mode for me.)
Fun Fly is Saturday. Hope it survives!
