As Minnflyer said, Polyurethane. I've done exactly that with my model stand and it is perfectly protected.

Don't over engineer this. I might offer the suggestion that you follow what experience has shown. No need to go into exaggerated expense.. simply use Polyurethane.. a few coats and you're done with it.

I've done that and it works just fine.
