Mine is finished and sealed with thinned epoxy, it is liquid proof, extremely durable and perfectly clear. A bit more time consuming then a spray on type however.

X2 what MinnFlyer said.
I put four coats of high gloss polyurethane on my field box. Sanded between coats...smooth as glass and the grain of the wood really pops out.

Poly U. Just make sure it sets for a few days before use so it sets up, then it seems to be pretty fuel proof.

Unfortunately epoxy is not ultraviolet proof. Your epoxy finish will last longer if you cover it with a good quality (maybe marine) varnish with ultraviolet filters. My 2 cents.

As Minnflyer said, Polyurethane. I've done exactly that with my model stand and it is perfectly protected.

Don't over engineer this. I might offer the suggestion that you follow what experience has shown. No need to go into exaggerated expense.. simply use Polyurethane.. a few coats and you're done with it.

I've done that and it works just fine.

Minwax Helmsman Spar Urathane.

It is for indoor/outdoor use, UV protectant, waterproof.
