Once you do get them dialed in they are great however.

The Evolution .46's run fairly well once broken in.
I haven't seen problems with the bearings, so I can't speak to that, but the limiters are indeed a POS.
I can't say they are low on power though. I've swapped them in to replace an O.S. AX .46, and when using the same prop, I've seen almost no difference in performance.
As you've stated the O.S. ( non-bleed carb ) engines are one of the easiest 2C engines to set up out of the box.
Novices tend to do well with them as a result.
A good idea is also to do a nose up pinch test.
With the plane nose up at full throttle the engine should speed up, but a quick pinch should NOT cause it to shut off. It may briefly slow down though. If so you have it about right.
