evolution .46 nx engine ??help??
#26
I currently have an evo 46, that someone else broke in for me, but it has been running great, it can almost keep up with my friends os 50 on the same tiger.

Some lines have better quality control over other lines, but in general the are good engines for the price.

I have several Evolutions, .45s, .46s & .61s & they all run great if there tuned correctly. If you have some you don't want just send them to me.

I've tried everything guys changed the fuel tubing changed the glow plug severl times o.s. #8 and some crap fireball plugs. I removed the blue collar and everything. I get it right and then when I throttle up she acts liek it has too much gas and wants to die and sputter before going full rpms. I set the high end and did the pinch test it reved up and died. I am lost . Had to walk away after 3 hrs and almost crushed that plane

opjose posted this in another thread about the evo engines. thought it might help you.

Be aware that there are several inherent problems with the Evolution engine as it comes.
- The ideal needle settings are normally outside the range that you can attain, as the limiters prevent good tuning!
- The needles tend to "walk" when the plane is warm and in flight!!!
This second problem is a biggie!
As you move the throttle up and down, the needles settings will CHANGE!
You need to cure BOTH problems.
- Pull the metal PEG out of the limiters. It will come out with a bit of force.
- Remove both needles and take the friction clips off.
- Bend the clips so they produce a stronger friction force.
- Re-install everything and re-tune.
- Once tuned, cut a piece of exhaust tubing to fit over the needles ( particularly the LS one ).
- Place the small tubing section over the LS needle to cause the clip to grip even more strongly.
This will prevent the problems you have.

Fine, send them to me.
I have several, and if you're willing to take the time to tune them instead of immediately giving up on them and bad-mouthing them, they run great!

where can I send this thing to get it fixed or what ever is wrong with it I have to plug the muffler to get fuel to the carb??????? it will run irregularly for a bit until i throtle it up and then it sputters until it reaches max rpms then i throttle it down it still runs fast then slowly dies pulled the gas tank out changed the clunk and tubes took the carb competly apart hummm everything was good reassembled and still nothing i hate evolution and starting to hate this hobby

not sure what you mean by this

We can sit here and "Armchair quaterback" all day long, but your best bet is to find someone in your club that is good with engines and have him help you out.

It could be something simple that we are overlooking because we don't have hands on time with it

I've got a Evolution .46 and also a .61NT and have nothing but good experiences with them. I planted the .61 six inches in the ground once and after a little cleaning, it still runs great. I've found that they like 15% a little better than 10% fuel though.

Lots of good info here on fixing the evo .46. Just wanted to add something I found on my evo .46 after being on the verge of tossing it due to deadsticks, inconisistant needle settings, etc. I pulled the engine out of the plane and pulled the nipple that the fuel line goes to on the carburetor so I could make sure it was sealed. I found a good sized chip of metal in the hole. Once Ipulled out that chip and reset the needles to factory, it runs like a champ.

Sorry I'm late to the party. I had an Evo 46 NT that came in my Hangar 9 PNP Cub. This turned out to be the worst engine I have ever owned. It was supposed to be pre- set from the factory with no break in required. From the moment I first turned the crankshaft the bearings felt kind of "gritty" if you will. I contacted Horizon and the tech guy said this was normal. I thought this was kind of weird but o.k. I'll try it. I ran about a half a tank of fuel before it's maiden flight just to check things over. Maiden flight lasted about 45 seconds before silence and a deadstick landing of an unfamiliar plane. Reset the needles and tried again. This flight lasted about 1 minute before a wheel fell off and cut the flight short. I packed up and went home. The next time out seemed o.k. on the ground after running a full tank of fuel through it. Took off and about 20 seconds into the flight it quit again. Another deadstick and more aggravation. I took the engine out of the plane and mounted it on a test stand and still the same problem. Idles o.k., accelerates o.k. and then all of a sudden it quits. No sputtering, nothing. I tried different glow plugs and different fuel, removed the limiters, swapped needle valves with an old Magnum GPA which were a direct fit, tried different o-rings on the needles checked the o-ring under the carb but still the same result. I contacted tech support and they said it might be bad bearings so I sent it in for warranty repairs. Guess what? They said they replaced the bearings and still couldn't get it to run right and now they are sending me a new engine. I don't know if it will be the NT though as it looks like they replaced it with the NX but whatever they replace it with I'll run it on the test stand first and see how it runs. I may sell it to help fund a Saito Fa 62 for the plane. You may just have a defective unit. Send it in and see what they say. Horizon's tech support and service are first rate.

I've owned an EVO 46 for over 2 years. While not the best running 46 it has been dependable, biggest complaint is the end of the muffler turning, finally put a 2-56 screw to keep it from turning. I was helping a beginner last weekend with his trainer and EVO 46 and notice bubbles from the remote needle to the carb, but none from the tank to the remote. The engine was surging in flight. Removed limiters and intalled needle on carb cured the problem. Why dont you try that because it eliminates 3 potential places to develop leaks.

I don't have any experiance with evo, but if you tried tuning and everything else that was suggested, make sure the engine is sealed good. I had problems like that with a Magnum .46 I tried everything and it still had issues. it turned out that it was leaking at the backing plate. once I sealed it, it run fine.
Good Luck

I have two of the Evo .46 NT engines and in both cases the High Needle would float on me and it wouldn't be long before they would become too rich. All I did once I got them dialed back in was take a piece of fuel tube and push it over the needle valve to prevent it from spinning around on me. Since then, they have been great.

Got an evo .46 in my sig kougar. When I first got it new, them dummies at the factory had the low end needle completely closed.
After awhile, I got kinda ticked because of the limiters. I dremeled the low end pin out. Why in the H3LL would you make an engine
with a limiter??
For awhile, it would run but if you went to full throttle, the rpms took 7 seconds to go full. After adjusting the high end again it ran okay.
Next problem though, muffler's long screw kept getting loose and somehow the small nut at the end broke off. My last flight ended in a dead stick
just after takeoff due to the muffler getting loose. Plane would not accept throttle response. So, I am now going to grab another muffler.
When the engine is running good, it really yanks the kougar around!!!!! But the engine don't run good all the time like my OS's run.
Lucky...

I know this thread is a few months old, but I just wanted to say a couple of things.
First, thanks to all of you who posted positive, helpful, and friendly advise. I was having problems tuning an evo 46nt that I bought from a guy at our field. It was used, but looked brand new. I am not the best at tuning glow engines, so I came here looking for help. I read all the posts and tried a few suggestions before I got mine running absolutly perfect. This engine is very powerful when you get it set up right.
Second, the advise on resetting to factory settings is dead on! And removing the limiters is a MUST! My LS needle was way off. Originally the engine would start but would not transition without cutting off. And, low idle was very high. Also seemed as though once idled down to a certain point, the engine had a mind of its own and would run at whatever RPM it wanted.
I removed both limiters, closed the barrel to 1mm, closed the LS needle, then backed it out 1 and 1/4 turn. I know you guys said 1/5, but 1/4 is easier to find. Started the engine and adjusted the LS until it ran smooth. Then put the blue collar back on the LS needle ( be careful here, the needle will turn on you). After that, I re-adjusted HS and the engine really came to life.
Hated this engine when I first started setting it up, now, I love it. The needles will flote, use fuel tube like suggested here.
Thanks again for all your help, I was able to get this engine running by myself instead of having to ask the guys at the field for help. If I can get this thing to run, anyone can. Be patient and take your time, it can be done.
Now, If only I can find a thread as helpful about the Saito 180 I have mounted in a Hanger-9 P-51, I would be a happy flyer.

I just bought a new Evolution 46. It runs great, the only thing I had to do to start it was turn my plane upside down. (my engine is mounted upside down on the plane.) I had it on a trainer and crashed it violently into the ground. The carburater, muffler, and needle valve assembly broke, but I like it so much I'm going to buy another one. I had a tuned pipe on it for one tank of flying and the sound of the air going by the plane made more noise than the engine! For some reason, the pipe worked only on that one flight, I can't start it now unless I use the stock muffler. It runs just fine now anyway, and maybe I need a little more tuning of the engine to fit the pipe.
