having the tank level with the carb is a general rule of thumb. Even when level, when the tank is full, the fuel level is above the carn and when the tank is more than half empty, the fuel is below the carb. When you climb, the fuel is lower than the carb and when you nose down the fuel is above the carb.

Place the tank wherever it's the most convenient.
