RE: Ugly Stick Build
Been out flying this thing like crazy the last two weeks. Sorry, no video - too busy flying it!
Last week Ithink I got reversed on the flaperon setup though. With the flaperons down, it needs a bit of extra up trim. So, I took off and the plane immediately starts heading back to the ground!
Some else at the field - a very, very good pilot -had just dumped his ARF stick because it was way out of trim in the same direction, so I was really freaked out! I managed to figure things out without hitting anything though, and by the end of the day, Ihad figured out what I did wrong.
Thisweekend yet another club member was out with his Great Planes Ugly Stick ARF. Mine looks like an evilbrother to his. We've been chasing each other round the sky all weekend and having a blast.
Ithink Ihave a handle on the flaperons now. Ican definitely land better with them on, but they have their own issues.
1. I think partly because the ailerons go all the way out to the end of the wing, the plane can get very touchy as it approaches stall speed with the flaperons down. Up high, it seems safe from a snap tip stall. It just settles like a trainer. However, near the runway, it's hard to control. I end up bouncy the wings from side to side a bit before giving up, turning the flaps off, and giving it lots of throttle.
2. As Isaid, you have to hold a bit of up trim when they're down. This seemed backwards to me? I guess if I had a more expensive radio, Icould just program the trim onto the flaperon switch and be fine.
3. However, if you give it a little more power, you do end up going slower! And, if you keep the speed up above the touchy point, it'll land real sweet with them down.
So far, the plane only has one small scuff on the wing tip from a taxi error. Ihad been trying to move up to a Four Star 60. That's a great plane, but I think it was too much for my skills. This Stick is perfect! Ihighly recommend it, whether you build one, buy the GPARF, or even buy an Ultra Stick.
