Default RE: How does the magneto ignition system work?

ORIGINAL: Birman

I am curious as to how a magneto ignition system works. I know a voltage is generated when the crankshaft is turning, but does it go to a coil and then to the plug or is enough voltage generated from the magneto itself to fire the plug?

Does anyone have a link to the information?

The reason I'm asking is because one of the guys in our club insists that there is a set of points in the system and I think he is 100% wrong.

Thanks,
Birman
Many ignitions have no contact points. They do that with internal electronic switches. The low high amp voltage loads the first stage coil into full magnetic saturation, which then discharges through the High Tension coil to provide high voltage at low current for the spark.

PS
on most flywheels there is the US patent pending number. Go to USPTO.gov and look up the patent. The electronics will be described in more detail than yo care for.
