I am curious as to how a magneto ignition system works. I know a voltage is generated when the crankshaft is turning, but does it go to a coil and then to the plug or is enough voltage generated from the magneto itself to fire the plug?
Does anyone have a link to the information?
The reason I'm asking is because one of the guys in our club insists that there is a set of points in the system and I think he is 100% wrong.
Thanks,
Birman

Magneto ignition systems can be configured multiple ways, and at least for the older style systems, your friend is right, many of them used points as the switching mechanism to fire the secondary coil into the spark plug.</p>

PS
on most flywheels there is the US patent pending number. Go to USPTO.gov and look up the patent. The electronics will be described in more detail than yo care for.
