I usually get this noise when the prop shaft sleeve or bushings start to wear down. I have flex shaft that are nearly 10 years old that still work very well. When the right combination is selected they can last years with proper maintenance.

By prop shaft sleeve, you mean the teflon liner for the stuffing tube? This is my first time hearing it. It really did not last long after I started hearing it before the whole flex cable severed near the motor.
