Also, aside from what has been mentioned about how much can be learned on a trainer, it is nice to have one even if you have been flying for years just for an occasional relaxing flight that you just can't get from your hardcore 3D plane.
Plus trainers make excellent float planes if you ever get the chance to fly off of water.
