Depends on the age of the particular engine model. Cylinders changed between various models altering compression, but only somewhat. The later Mahle cylinders have a lot better porting than the earlier Sachs jugs, which is where most of performance differences came about. One manufacturer goes to the limit of tolerance performance with his cranks and rods, which helps a little more.
