Guys I am pretty much finished building a Top-Flite P-47 (Kit Version). I was wondering if anybody has any experiance with the Taurus line of engines and have had experiance with their 4.2 size engine? The reason why I am looking at them is because the brison 4.2, based on their website produces 30 pounds of thrust while the Taurus produce 36 pounds of thrust. Tell me what you guys think of this engine. I have been doing some research on this line in general and they seem pretty damn good. But, I haven't really found anybody that has experiance with their 4.2. Thanks

The Taurus, Brison, FPE and Fox 4.2 engines are all Sachs based and should have similar performance. Thrust would vary depending on many conditions and of course, mostly on the specific prop used for the test.
Have you called Taurus to see if that engine is still available?

I won't vouch for a thrust number because it changes with propeller sizes and user engine tuning.
The Taurus line of engines is excellent. Although Sachs based (nothing wrong with that at all) they take it a step further with extremely tight tolerances. They strive for zero-zero in all run out areas. The top ends are all Mahle products which are still the best there is unless one spent about 5 times as much for custom made components. All Taurus engines are typically much lower in vibration levels than most any other single cylinder engines and will be extremely long lived with only minimum customer care. If you don't hit the ground or run them lean they will probably last longer than you will.

Thats pretty much what I needed to know. I have a brison 2.4 and really liked it, but I wanted to try something different. Also, my Brison vibrates like crazy!! So I thought that the taurus line might run a little better.

Bill O also gives GREAT customer service AFTER the sale too.

""Sachs based Engines""
Tired Old Man, a question here,, when comparing Sachs based Engines such as Taurus, Brison and Sachs, couldn't 1 brand have more compression than the other ??

Depends on the age of the particular engine model. Cylinders changed between various models altering compression, but only somewhat. The later Mahle cylinders have a lot better porting than the earlier Sachs jugs, which is where most of performance differences came about. One manufacturer goes to the limit of tolerance performance with his cranks and rods, which helps a little more.

Hey there Wasp,
Keep in mind that while these engines all use the Sachs / Mahle pistons and cylinders, only the Taurus uses a Sachs crank. The FPE, Fox and Brison engines all used a cantilever crank arrangement with their own design crank, rod and crankcase. Using unique machined crankcases and in house designed cranks, all critical measurements could change quite a bit from an original Sachs engine. Yes even displacement and compression ratio could change a bit. I'm not saying this is a bad thing ..... just to expect slight differences from one make of engine to another even if they use the same piston / cylinder.

yeeaa, I was wondering if Taurus could be increasing their compression a bit by lowering the Deck Height of their Case, but this would also mess with Port Timing, so they probably don't..

Truckracer, I am a little confused on what you are saying about the cranks in the engine? Are you saying that because Taurus uses the Sachs crank that it will not vary from taurus engine to taurus engine?
