RE: Chip Hyde's Cap-X - Building & Flying
I found this post deep in this thread, somewhere around page 10:
I flew one I setup as a test bed for a small gas engine -
the all up weight was exactly - 12.75 lbs
The little gasser turned 7000 on a 18x8 Bambula - so the plane flew very nicely -BUT not near enough power to suite me .
This is a very nice ARF- I soldered all of the control horns and redrilled the bushings to .0625 and used all 2/56 control linkage - JR 811s on th elevators -a 8411 SAon the rudder and early JR digitals inth wings
the linkage is plenty strong
and the control is very precise
With a ZDZ40 -or any 40 that is good -this will be a dynamite ARF
The engine I tested weighed more than the ZDZ40 . it also had much less power as it was only about 1.8 cu in. very smooth - just -no poop.
balance was in the center of the bottom white stripe on the wing - behind the blue LE area.
I tried the Harrier stuff - very good - but power maneuvers were out - the waterfalls pooped out and barely made it back to level -
Nice plane.
So it looks like this guy had a 1.8 ci gasoline engine he was trying, and had trouble with the power 3D stuff. 1.8 ci equals 29.5 cc, which is the size of your engine. Maybe his engine was not as strong as yours, but it can't be too much different. If you look back in the pages from 5 to 15, you see guys happy with 1.6 to 1.8 glow, but reporting that the light engine forced them to add a lot of weight forward to balance the plane.
I have to say that I am not the best engine selection guy, but the post above is probably as close to what you will experience without actually trying it.
