About a .020" gap between the sensor and the magnet is fine. Set the timing at 28 degrees before top dead center. Set it so that you actually SEE a spark at 28 degrees, not when the magnet is over the sensor. Some units create the spark as the magnet approaches the sensor, others as it is leaving the sensor.
