My F-18 lost its canopy during a flight when I forgot to lock the canopy down completely (there was a 3 position switch and it was only on the middle position, not fully locked).The airplane flew ok, but did loose some trim adjustments. It sure scared the hell outta me though.

As for a canopy that could be shut by a servo, you'd have a stronger servo/canopy setup than any I've ever seen. The canopy ripped out 1/4" brass tubing and 1/8" Air cylinders faster than you can blink.

Don't a lot of modern jets actually have cords that hookup to the canopy so that the pull handle fails, the canopy can be raised, blown off by the airstream and then eject the seat thru a secondary mechanism?
