How about like this one. 10 years worth of F-4 egress work. Now let's see, canopy interlock block interdictor safety pin properly installed? ck --- --- --- ---

Default Ejection seat

Some models do not fly very well with the canopy missing.
I talked to an ANG pilot that was flying an F-4C Phantom that lost the rear canopy in-flight. He stated that the airplane was almost unflyable.

^^^ But you could open eject the pilot and with a strong servo shut the canopy.

I thought ejection seats were for extreme emergencies? If you get into trouble hit the eject, at least then you can say the pilot survived the crash even if your $$$$ plane is in a pile of burning wood and composite. You may also try to save the plane by having the seat pull out a big chute to gently lower your plane if you have enough altitude.

Default Ejection seat??

Have all the radio gear, Receiver, batteries, servos, ecu etc..
rocketed out of the model before it crashes thereby saving $100's.

Default Ejection seat??

My F-18 lost its canopy during a flight when I forgot to lock the canopy down completely (there was a 3 position switch and it was only on the middle position, not fully locked). The airplane flew ok, but did loose some trim adjustments. It sure scared the hell outta me though.

As for a canopy that could be shut by a servo, you'd have a stronger servo/canopy setup than any I've ever seen. The canopy ripped out 1/4" brass tubing and 1/8" Air cylinders faster than you can blink.

Don't a lot of modern jets actually have cords that hookup to the canopy so that the pull handle fails, the canopy can be raised, blown off by the airstream and then eject the seat thru a secondary mechanism?

Default eb2fly--seat

eb2fly, Sorry bud, that seat is either resting on the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico, sitting in the sun at AMARC or now flying under someone elses flag. They dont make much of a lazy boy either, way to hard of a seat cushion Plus AF versions have a flat lumbar pad and the crews had to wear if I remember correctly a tree lowering device that was part of their harness to support their back.

MB Mark 7 was a good seat, would save your bacon more often then not. Both seats clear the jet in 3 seconds!!.

Check EBay sometimes theres some interesting stuff on there concerning ejection seats.

Default Open air Panthers?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the CAI model Panther able to fly with its canopy open just like the full-scale? I noticed in the movie "The Bridges At Toki-ri " that the Panther pilot's would take off from the carrier deck with their canopies open!

Panthers used a sliding canopy, thus they could be open in flight. Most modern Military Jets use rear hinged canopys. , when the front comes up it acts like an airbrake!!!
