From what he stated, these slivers will pass through the filter. I have always had a fuel filter on my fuel jug. The issue I had was big enough to have me think that the engine was garbage. What little bit of whatever was in my carb made a 100% difference, and restored my faith in the engine. It was night and day. You will surely know if you have this problem just by the way the engine is performing (or not in my case).
