The retaining strips actually permit a more even and consistent reed seal but there's a caveat. On my stock 30 I tossed the reed stop and substituted a retention strip with some real screws. If you leave the bottom edge of the strip square it generates a stress riser in the reed. You should radius the forward bottom edge of reed retainers.
Yes, I agree with the radius. MVVS uses this in thier 58. 8.

The new MT35 uses metal reeds.
