Vince, My best guess would be that someone started that kit many moon ago, then got distracted by a shiny object. I did my second Vertigo (back in the day) using 1/64 ply veneers. Strong as heck, very nice base for finishing, and heavy compared to balsa. A square inch of veneer weighs about the same as 1/8 balsa.
