You are absolutely correct about being able to separate the 4N1 into it's individual components - the receiver section and the gyro/mixer section (I did this after I burned up the gyro/mixer section and didn't want to buy an entirely new 4N1).
The hack will look a bit bulky b/c Eflight puts the pins on both sides of the board (that way the gyro/mixer section plugs into the back and gives the "brick" appearence) - in essence you'll have your servo's plugged into the one side and the motor (main and tail) plugged into the opposite side, if memory serves correctly.
