RE: 2010 Jetero Pattern Classic
A little more regarding the Smargd incident. A Sportsman pilot, eager to get in a quick practice flight, took off without connecting the ailerons. The airplane had a slow right roll and seemed doomed. Mark and others helped the pilot with input advice so that he kept it in the air while Brett was located. Brett took over and flew a bunch of rolling circles until he figured out the timing to get the thing low over the runway upright and wings level, setting it down smoothly and taxing it back. A very nice job of saving a new competitor's airplane. The pilot had a moment to refuel and connect the ailerons - then was first up (and a bit nervous) and still flew well.
