Default The Chicken

Well, this one still bothers me but since you ask, I'll tell you about my funky chicken. I've been flying heli's since Aug, of last year so I'm pretty new, but I've only crashed twice, once trying nose-in for the first time ( I'm still working on that one ) and the other time I just lost orientation in some tree shadows, I was flying too late in the evening.
But my third incident ( it wasn't a crash!) is the one that really bothered me. I was test hovering the heli for the first time since last fall out on the drive way. I was basically just making sure the engine would run OK before driving all the way out to the park. My boys ( 3,6,7 ) were all excited because they go along and play in the other section of the park. They were in the back yard kicking a large rubber ball around that they were going to bring along.
Well to make a looooong story short, the ball came over the corner of the house and hit the heli while in about a 6" hover. It just exploded, I'm still finding pieces when I mow the lawn. But, the heli just lay there on it's side still running and jerking all around, like a wounded animal that just wouldn't die ( a chicken with its head cut-off). I finally got over too it and pulled the fuel line.
And NO, no one was close to the ball or the heli, my boys no better then to get close to the heli or an airplane while they are running we have very strict rules about that. And one last point the ball, it was unhurt, although I really, really wanted to do some thing deflating too it.
