The funky chicken dance is when you crash, the throttle linkage pops off, like it usually does, and the heli is lying there thrashing and beating it's self to death. It's quite an impressive display and I've seen it often....

Don't know about you but a gasser with the tank almost full would definately be the sean. I've experienced this once and I tell you, about 45 minutes (unlease someone with balls or something will get in the way) dancing. We tried to help someone to learn on a gasser (his idea) on a huge parking lot. Had the hoop on a Ergo Gass. He friked out from about 3 feet and dumpt it hard. Broke the hoop, skids, and don't know why but it went full throttle from there all the way to about 45 minutes later. We could not get to it because we figure eventually will get to a curbe. Well it did but it baunced back and with even more power. The rest is history.

I see the funky chicken ever year at the Crow Island fun fly in Manyard MA. It looks like the helicopter is flopping like a fish on the ground.

This Funky Chicken brings up a question.
Who decided that the throttle arm on the engines should have a spring to hold it wide open when the throttle linkage pops off.
That's just plain rude !!!!!

Someone has already thought about this...
Excerpted from the RAPTORHELI-list
Excerpted from the RAPTORHELI-list
Hey everybody,
Nobody wants to crash..., and it's something you might not want to think about, but I have seen how the FUNKY CHICKEN can ruin a motor.... Luckily, I haven't gone through the experience of having to stand there, and watch my heli flop around until finally burning up the clutch bell lining, and ultimately, a motor.., and I am hoping that I never have to.
I don't know why it took me this long to share this idea with you guys, because it is something I have been doing for a long time now.
I have been placing a light spring between the servo arm, and the throttle arm, so that if the throttle linkage pops off in a crash..., hopefully, the throttle will be closed instantly. This only works out that easily if the throttle barrel closes when the servo arm pulls. If not, the spring might have to attach to something else. On my OS 61 SX wc, I just use the other side of the throttle arm to attach the spring. I attached the spring from the furthest hole in on the servo arm, and to the furthest hole in on the throttle arm..., so as to place a lighter load on the throttle servo. This has likely prevented the funky chicken at least once for me, if not more.
I am lucky enough to have a really good local hardware store nearby that has just about everything you can think of in stock (McFaddendale's, in Las Vegas). They have an impressive array of springs in stock. I noticed the display for the springs one day while I was in there looking around for other stuff. I don't even remember if I had come up with the idea before I bought the springs that I use, but I selected light duty springs that range from about 1 to 2 inches long. The coils are about 3/16 diameter. The spring wire is very light gauge, and so it is light in weight, and doesn't pull too hard.
I haven't had any RF problems that I know of, but I run PCM receivers. I am not sure if the spring might cause interference by rubbing against the metal throttle pushrod, but I guess you could use shrink wrap on the throttle pushrod if you are concerned about that issue..., especially if you are running FM receivers.

Well, this one still bothers me but since you ask, I'll tell you about my funky chicken. I've been flying heli's since Aug, of last year so I'm pretty new, but I've only crashed twice, once trying nose-in for the first time ( I'm still working on that one ) and the other time I just lost orientation in some tree shadows, I was flying too late in the evening.
But my third incident ( it wasn't a crash!) is the one that really bothered me. I was test hovering the heli for the first time since last fall out on the drive way. I was basically just making sure the engine would run OK before driving all the way out to the park. My boys ( 3,6,7 ) were all excited because they go along and play in the other section of the park. They were in the back yard kicking a large rubber ball around that they were going to bring along.
Well to make a looooong story short, the ball came over the corner of the house and hit the heli while in about a 6" hover. It just exploded, I'm still finding pieces when I mow the lawn. But, the heli just lay there on it's side still running and jerking all around, like a wounded animal that just wouldn't die ( a chicken with its head cut-off). I finally got over too it and pulled the fuel line.
And NO, no one was close to the ball or the heli, my boys no better then to get close to the heli or an airplane while they are running we have very strict rules about that. And one last point the ball, it was unhurt, although I really, really wanted to do some thing deflating too it.

I was at the Bakersfield fun fly and saw it happen live. What a scene? Previous years they had helicopter drag racing and then someone decided to try helicopter pylon for 94. While I was there, I remember seeing a couple of midairs (one of them is on that site) and the funky chicken incident. As I recall, it was the final race for the gold, there was a fierce battle for 1st and 2nd, and that guy clipped the pole shearing his blades off. Some guy from Team Kalt won the race.
That was a great event.

well, in an airplane you crash and its usually the airframe is completely destroyed but a heli, you can just bolt on the replacement parts, fixed in a few hours an airplane can take weeks of rebuilding to be flight ready then its heavyer
a heli rebuilds and can look just like nothing happen

i dont know (if) or how long it takes you to build an airplane kit from box o wood to flying machine but i can assure you thats it at lease 6 months more then boling on new parts to a heli!
