Don, I think that the reason the flashes went off is the fact that in the presence of high energy radio frequencey waves ,gas filled lamps like you have
will illuminate.In fact,most larger radio transmitters like aboard navy ships and broadcast radio stations always had a fluorescent tube next to the
transmitter as this shows that you are in fact putting out a signal. And there are NO wires attached to the tube.
