Default few basic questions

Hello

I've been watching tons of Youtube videos on RC FPV flight and I'm hooked. I researched as much as i could on the subject and figured out the basic setup that i would need to fly FPV but i still have some questions.

1. What is the longest range available for a wireless cam/Rc plane Tx and Rx system? Many sites claim their FPV system can get range at 3 miles (with add-on antennas and top class tx and rx), but how about and RC plane system like a JR or Futuba? I don't want to try flying 3 miles out and having my plane lose my signal.

2. Speaking of signals giving out... I've seen a nice little gadget that uses GPS to give flight info as well as providing a failsafe and Autopilot. Here's the link: [link=http://www.rangevideo.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=49&products_id=135]RangeVideo OSD[/link] . On the connection diagram they show the sensor being hooked up to a ESC.. meaning electronic flight. Does anyone know of a way to have one of these hooked up just to a throttle servo for a glow engine?

That's all i can remember for now but I'm sure I'll have more questions as i get deeper into this. Thanks in advance for input.

Default RE: few basic questions

Well Alex of the Dominican Republic did a nice job with his RVOSD, but not sure about how it will manage throttle on glo planes. However Dragon OSD by Intelligent Flight has no problems with that. All it needs is the throttle cable to be connected to it and you must set the fail safe mode on your RX. From there when you lose radio control, the auto pilot will kick in and the throttle set to your desired rate, plane flies back to you.

As for video range, well it's not a problem to achieve 5 miles with a 500mW Lawmate TX and Lawmate RX with a 14db patch pointing it at all times. Or if you want to go for more.. try a yagi antenna.

Now here is another tip for extreme long range flight control. Intelligent Flight is almost finished with their Dragon Link which is a tiny box that will connect to your trainer port. It will work on the 433mhz frequency and a matching rx will be installed in the plane. This has been tested on the ground at a respectible range of 8Km, although in the air they figure maybe around 20 to 25 km of radio control for your plane/heli.

Here are some videos to watch to understand this better.
