In fixing the AMA we have to first get the mindset of many of the EC members, including the President's, changed . . . That the modelers on the Internet are just a bunch of rabble rousers with nothing better to do.

The mission is to convince them is that until the AMA has their own forum, run by appointed AMA volunteers with guidelines that are enforced, that the lists like this can be a valuable sounding board for them and a place for them to answer the questions and concerns. They all have AVPs (except the Pres and EVP) one of which would be designated the Internet "PR" man for the District if the VP isn't comfortable doing it himself.

You will have VPs, which the last thing they want is to be questioned or challenged in public on any point, that will feel that it is in their best interest to stonewall the Internet "riff-raff". It has worked up until now - but as the Internet becomes more main stream will this attitude continue to serve them? . . . . Sooner or later the "Internet active" modelers reach a level where they will have an influence on elections.

You can only look to District V - in the thread;

http://www.rcuniverse.com/showthread.php
s=&threadid=991449&forumid=211

to see an example. A VP gives it away that he is lurking here, and now is deluged with questions he seems to refuse to address.

District V will fix their problem in 2004 and challenges the members of other districts to do the same if they perceive they have a problem when their VP comes up for reelection.

If such a forum were in the Member's Only section, and posts were appended with the name and AMA number of the poster, would it even need moderators?

Honsest question now, you and I included. Do you think that some of the comments to or about AMA leaders go over the line? Should some standard be set? Are moderators preferable?

Manage by exception. Have the moderators standing by if needed. Just knowing that a forum is moderated will rein in a lot of the head bangers that want to see how far they can push.

If comments are made about AMA leaders that cannot be substantiated then the individual is warned. ONCE. And then he is toast. I will not happen very often.

Well I'm in your district and the topic of the AMA came up at our monthly club meeting last night.

General consensus was just let it ride as is till the club can find another form of insurance as that's all the club gets out of it currently. We do no events like racing/pattern flying etc...

I asked about the upcoming election and everyone just blew it off "as if it matters".
I was told that at a fly in recently and that is one of the reasons I was watching the elections process so intently. Most of us cheered when we practically appointed Sandy Frank and I was one of the leaders of that pack. Since then I have been floored to hear negatives about him all across the district. I know the shell of many ideas have been presented and apparently flushed as unimportant because many have indicated that to me. People in different areas began mentioning me running against him 4 years ago.

The clubs should get more support from the AMA in the form of national recognition of the hobby and specific assistance in improving their facilities so more of the public can be invited to spectator (and get 'infected' with our disease) without the fears of injury. Sandy recently put out some mail where he was looking for a safety coordinator, but it appears he was just trying to position himself in the eyes of the onlookers. Nothing was done even though there were valid, important, and helpful suggestions passed his way.

That is one of my biggest goals, to accomplish this hopefully on a national basis. We already know that over 1/2 our insured losses are not involved with flying, but simple (and expensive) trip and fall accidents. When was the last time the AMA ever provided anyone with a list of the most common things claims are paid on? If your club was provided a list like that I suspect you would review and take steps to prevent injuries to spectators by things shown to be frequently in claims.

On this forum we have beat up tiered memberships which will not work and really just become a mask for additional dues increases. That is treating the symptom rather than the disease.

Some of these things wind up attacking people's sacred cows, but if no action is ever taken other than paying more and more claims, the hobby A*N*D the AMA are history. I would like to at least try to prevent that.
