I think Marc should add a 'God Bless The AMA' forum where only posts in praise of AMA and the actions of its officers and staff are allowed. Give the people that want to hear only what is good and wonderful about AMA their own place to express themselves, and not be subjected to posts 'bashing' AMA. As I read the frequent complaints about 'bashing' in this context, it means advocating change, which I can understand is blasphemous to somebody that thinks it is perfect as it is. Now it's hard to rationalize changes without citing faults with the status quo, and so there are always going to be some that are offended. A forum where they can share their positive views of AMA with like-minded individuals should be, for some of them at least, favored over being disgusted with what they read in the AMA Discussions forum.

Although I often find myself on the other side of issues, I agree with your contention as posted here. I would suggest to you that the sterile AMA forum on RC Groups is exaclty what will happen here, should the rules be changed. If this forum is to remain thought provoking, those of the AMA's "loyal opposition" must be allowed to express their opinon.

I think you miss the point. There's nothing wrong with advocating change in the AMA. The problem is personal attacks and insults. There's a difference between saying, for example, "The current officers have lost touch with the membership," and "Mr. So-and-so has his head up his arse." The first can be responded to, the second just makes people defensive and understandably makes them feel attacked. I don't think a moderated AMA Forum would cut out any respectfully-stated difference of opinion or advocacy for change. It would cut out the name calling and the insults (used by only a small group of members) that drive people apart, and away from the forum.

I think a simple question may make a point. Should one be more, or less, offended when called an “idiot� as opposed to being told that one is “incapable of reading material, comprehending it, and using it�?

In other words, should the ability to be glib be used as a standard by which an individual’s post is judged?

Profanity is another matter and not what I am addressing.

The best thing is to check the facts before you put your what ever in gear. It's hard to Eat Crow when you are used to FISH EGGS!!!!!!!

That is your opinion, and while it happens that I agree with you, there are many that do not. The topic will always be contentious, no matter how PC one may try to be in stating his opinion. AMA is a patriotic cause to some, nearly a religion to others. Try telling a group of Baptists as politely as possible that the Savior has returned... to Salt Lake City.

i don't visit any forum, other than the ama one, on this site. although i did click the link to vote.

Last I looked... it was essentially tied. A couple more votes to leave it alone than to change it.

Both are equally unacceptable in my view. It's not the name calling, it's the focus on the poster rather than the subject being discussed. They are both "personal attacks" in that they focus on the person rather than on the subject being discussed. In the first case, it is enough to reply, "I disagree, I think such and such." Other readers can determine on their own the intelligence of the poster. In the second case, it's enough to say, "My reading of such and such document makes me believe that such and such is true."

RCU is selling to the advertisers that it is an entertaining and well visited site. The users of this sight are both the entertainers and the entertainees. If the AMA forum bosses decide that they want the GOOD HOUSE KEEPING SEAL OF APPROVAL, that's their business. If I don't like the new product, I will simply vote my displeasure with the off button on my computer.

Combatpig you nailed it !! the AMA forum hasn't had so much traffic its even spilled over to the clubhouse!!!
Funny thing is now the really entertaining part is watching the moderators jump all over the threads and lock them down not before however, leaving hysterical responses like plane insanes in the thread started by P-51B

BTW the my answer to your question is that RCU will not remove this forum or any other forum IF they think it will reduce the amount of traffic this site receives. (Biting the hand that feeds them comes to mind)

If only the threads dealing strictly with the AMA were this entertaining.

If you ask me RCU should be paying some of these characters good help is hard to find

I never seen so many locked threads in the AMA Forum. I guess now we have to toe the AMA EC line and say all sorts of warm and fuzzies about how great the organization is currently being run and that DB is the all wise and all knowing Grand Poobah.

You can't have valid opinionated discussion without some discourse. This whole situation could have been handled by the moderators on back channels, but I guess they where just lookin for a reason to jump in. Couple of emails and if required turn off the access of the offending party and it would have ended long ago.

I think certain bad situations were left unattended for too long and have now boiled over.

We will continue the flow of conversation as before, but will not allow the personal attacks to continue... as Art stated in his thread. This will allow you folks to be as passionate about your point of view as before, while keeping the thread from disseminating into name calling.

Ok let me say this one more time and then that's it! I have changed nothing as far as the moderation goes here in the AMA forum! You can debate any issue as hard as you want and with as much fervor that you can muster but when people start using unnecsasary descriptive adjectives I will jump in and take what ever action I feel that is necsasary. I have all ready done this to prove my point and if that makes me the heavy then fine I can live with that title! If you look back at how little this forum is really moderated you wouldn't be making these kind of accusations but sometimes a person has to come in and get control back and this is one of those times. Enough said!

I have never met the large majority of posters on this forum. Something to be said for that, I suppose.

What you have said puts the RCU administration in the same situation as the TV networks. They want to come across as providing wholesome, educational, family entertainment, yet thrive on shows that degrade and demoralize people such as Jerry Springer and Survivor. Why? Because those types of shows bring in viewers, and the more viewers, the more advertising dollars.
