Default Frequency Scanner?

Can someone recommend a frequency scanner for a small club? What type of scanners does the AMA own? Our club wanted something with better range than the Hobbico scanner.

Thanks

ICOM make several scanners that can handle our freq's. I've used an ICOM R10 for years ; the R2, R3 and R5 are capable systems as well.

The scanner that I use for personal use is an Icom R3 scanner. It is PC programmable, pocketable and a lot less costly than the Icom 3000 type scanners used by AMA districts. It is much more sensitive than the Hobbico and it has a spectrum analyzer function that lets you see any RC or non-RC signals adjacent to the one you are monitoring in a graphical manner.

Scanners can be a good thing especially for telling you when a transmitter is on within the immediate area. However it may well be a point to be mindful of is that our 72MH. transmitters are in the VHF (Very High Frequency) range and are subject to those characteristics of that range. The frequency is strictly line-of-sight, and subject to being blocked and/or redirected by irregular terrain, steel/steel reinforced concrete, and reflected off water as a light ray reflects from a mirror.

Therefore what a scanner picks up on the ground may not be all that an aircraft is subjected to when a hundred or more feet in the air. Just to keep in mind. [sm=what_smile.gif]

Thanks for the help. I will do some research on the scanners you suggested and present the info to my club.

I had an ICOM IC-R2, but either lost it or it evolved and developed legs and walked away with someone It worked nice.
