Not sure. Sign was stuck in the ground Friday.

RE: Whats wrong with this picture?

interesting

lets look back and see what declarations have been made about club fields and muncie:

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=10022934

And to take it one step farther, the AMA really does nothing with a club's flying site beyond providing a certificate of insurance for the field owner if requested and paid for by the club. The AMA does not inspect, approve, or have any oversight of a field. There are suggested field layouts, but clubs are under no requirement to use them.
http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=9588872

Just for clarification, the AMA really does not have any actual flying site rules. The membership manual (cited above) contains some general field guidelines to aid clubs or individuals in setting up fields, but there is no AMA requirement that they be used.

AMA does not sanction, approve, inspect, or have any oversight on RC flying fields. The one and only requirement that even comes close is requiring clubs within a short distance of each other to work out a frequency sharing plan. And that's it.
although,
some folks dont agree with that,
apparently the folks that put up that sign for instance

I suggest you contact your District VP and ask him:

http://www.modelaircraft.org/aboutam...c/contact.aspx

Any info on the circumstances at the club? Known issues? What club is it??

Are they perhaps planning on drilling an oil or gas well off the end of the runway? The red tractor trailer in the last picture looks like oilfield related equipment to me. The big end dump trailer in the middle picture is also an indicator of some heavy work going on.

Looks like people working under approach/take off path? Where are the pilot stations? What is on the ground under where the aircraft would be flying?

Without naming names, two AMA officials told the city council here, that there was "no safety issues" with putting in this 650' X 50' asphalt runway even after being told by their superior that it was a bad idea.

Silent,
why contact the AMA
if it is as you said over and over (and over and over and over)
that AMA has no say regarding club fields?

So you, I guess, just don't fly models unless at an AMA chartered flying field or another location you have written permission..

Since you are so fond of splitting hairs, please indulge me.

First - there is no such thing as an AMA chartered flying field. AMA does not charter, sanction, approve, bless, ordain, or otherwise recognize flying site in any manner. AMA charters clubs, who may, or may not, have a flying site. Further, the Safety Code makes no mention of permission to fly or not, so written permission is certainly not specified as a requirement.

All the AMA says is that you need to be flying in accordance with the safety code or your coverage MAY be jeopardized. Notice it does not say WILL, but MAY.

"with putting in this 650' X 50' asphalt runway"

looking at that 972' yellow line,
I just dont see any 'new' 650ft runway in that 'old' picture

looking at the location of the structure vs the runway in the video its clear its not the same runway

Maybe the issue is the adjacent roads...

That is our 250' runway with apron. The new 650'X50' is beside it.

Ah, now I understand. So, a 650' line would then look about like this. The south end of this line is about 660 to the I40 right of way.

Edit (again): had it right the first time, after watching this video ([link=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-EoUHizd7U]link[/link] flying over I-40 [X(])

GAP, thats about the size of it. It's close enough that the road noise drowns out my 3W150. :(

What is on the other side of the runway? I see some sort of building in the photo.

RE: Whats wrong with this picture?

TimJ, thats a pavilion with restrooms. The city has been very generous with my tax dollars. ;)

RE: Whats wrong with this picture?

With the longer runway comes faster planes and planes with higher wingloads, significantly raising the chances of a mishap with the Interstate. It will only take one.

KidEpoxy 10-03-2011 08:25 PM

RE: Whats wrong with this picture?

Well, it might be safe if you only fly appropriate craft for a short takeoff or tight dogleg takeoff.
I'm sure the electrics and .40-.60 crowd can survive with a NoFly line just a few feet from th end of the runway.
Sheesh, just about anything but turbines can fly there safely.

wait for it...

Oh btw ExtraNut,
what kind of craft did folks have in mind when they decided they wanted this huge runway?

extra-nut 10-03-2011 08:33 PM

RE: Whats wrong with this picture?

Kid, the runway was sold to the city council by the "officials" as a opportunity to draw large RC Events to the city.

RE: Whats wrong with this picture?

Seems to me to be a bunch of yahoos worrying about the sky falling... Maybe you could make the field 3d only and set up 20 pilot stations down the runway.. everybody gets 30 feet.. with a 50' buffer off of the end...
