Foam planes make better trainers than balsa panes. Some look nice in the air or at a distance in my mind that is where they should look good

Foam is cheap and easy to shape in a mold. The production costs are rediculously low with expanded foam items, which is why you even find them in such "throwaway" things like packaging.
We pay an outrageous amount for a foam fuselage, or even replacement parts given the above.
Foamies ( not the electronics, just the airframe ) and their parts should be dirt cheap. Instead they are outrageously priced!
A few flights later and a foamy, particularly a nice painted one, looks like cr_ap.
Just compress your foam airplane components sometime, in a bit of a bad landing, and see how "easy" it is to uncompress!
A few scraps of Balsa and covering, plus a small bit of work, and my balsa planes look as good as or better than new, and they tend to be stronger too.
The "foam is better" mantra is usually spouted by those who have yet to learn how to fix their own wood planes, or who have never built a kit.
Foamies have their place... and can be better suited to some venues, indoors, parks, etc.
But better? No.... Hence Kmot's original post...

I see the benefit of external servos for 3D/sport flyers where you want the linkage short and stiff and move the CG aft. But for scale planes? That's wrong!
I guess you can make a foam plane look real nice if you put some effort into it, but not the factory blow-molded stuff.
Rap is crap!
I also don't like the new trend to have 2-piece main landing gears (aluminum). Maybe it saves manufacturing cost, but it seems much flimsier than the one-piece.
Cheap chinese screws, pushrods, clevises, etx... that go straight from the ARF box to the trash.
I still haven't figured out why my wife puts up with me either.

The more I think about it, I dislike pilot figures in general. Most just look cartoonish and I feel like I am playing with dolls or something when installing one.
They do however creep my wife out. I love putting one on the nightstand next to her when she is asleep, putting one next to the milk in the refrigerator, in the cabinet, etc. for her to find. She only stays mad at me for a few hours.

I have to try this one out too! [sm=thumbup.gif]

And as long as we're going to stop ''bleeping'' out words, please stop fuzzing out the ''other'' good stuff!
Leave it up to the parents to decide what their kids should watch!
Uh-oh, I think we've created a ''monster thread''...

Feel free to add to the list.
Feel free to add to the list.

I think all new "what oil is best?", "Why did my ignition fail?", "what RPM does your engine run at?" or "is DA or DL your favorite engine brand" threads should be on the list too
Right now I am looking for pilot figures to put around the house while they are all still asleep

Eh, yeah right... that's why most clubs REQUIRE non-foam "trainers" in their training programs....

Darnit, I just got my very first helmet head, painted it, and installed it in a new AW Ultimate! AND I think it looks cool, haha. I am always a day late and a dollar short. Oh well. :P Gonna enjoy it anyway. Jon

I actually have a long list of things I hate. Sometimes I feel like putting all of them into a book or maybe doign a web site called "stuff Chuck hates".
Depron. I know it's foam but it's the worst of all the foams, so it deserves its own, special place.

Oh!!! I miss so much those saturdays evenings building balsa planes with my father... I'd really love to repeat it (build planes) with my son but some chinese-note there is no adjective- decided to make:
Please; let's Dope and epoxy smell come back again!!!!

Please make them stop manufacturing large scale foam ARF's! [:@]
(...)
And while I am at it:
(...) putting servos on the outside of the fuselage! How ugly, how un-scale, how lazy. Get back to installing servos inside the model and using linkages!
(...) putting full face motorcycle helmet wearing pilots in airplanes! Nowhere, anywhere, does a pilot wear a full face moto helmet in an airplane!

Thats funny... my 4 year old son had a question for me the last time we were at the field. "Dad, why is the pilot wearing a race car helmet?"
Where and when did this start...

I do not care about "foamies" because I do not have one. It is your choice, buy one or not. Servos outside the fuse? Why not, if it is a giant stick. What does a full size stick look like?
Put the servos where you like them.
I dislike videos where they show you a jet, and you cannot hear at all the turbine becuse they have crappy music on the background. Let me hear the plane! Would I like to see a F1 race in Monaco with an opera music blaring in the bacground? Hell no! A Reno air race in mute?
I also hate people that do not like something, and wand to impose their view on others by banning what they do not like, like other people's rights. Now that's something I hate. Racists, ignorants, religious fanatics, extremists (both right and left), imbecils, people that want to impose their views on my, hateful people, hunger, abuse, uneducated people, I have to stop:-)
Enjoy your hobby, and your stay in this world, as it is way too short. You do not pick how long youi will stay here, but you have choices on how to live it:-)

I would have to say my biggest dislike is the people that use these forums to promote hatred and discord with their acidic remarks. I like RCU and RCG because I love this hobby and have learned a lot from them. 48 years in the hobby and still more new stuff to learn and experience! When the "trolls" come out I wish they would quit posting their negative attitudes and go attend a therapy session or something like it.
Let's go fly!
