Can anyone recommend a good second airplane. I have become comfortable with my Hobbico Superstar and want to move on. I have my eye on the Goldberg Tiger 60. Is this a good choice?

This is where this hobby starts to branch out into a huge variety of directions.

I personally went with the T-34 as a 'low-wing' trainer while my friend who solo'd the same weekend as me went with the particular plane you were looking at.

As far as we are both concerned, both of these airplanes were as easy to fly as our trainers and even easier to land! (remember, your trainer wants to stay in the air...remember your porposing landings and bounces)?

The T-34 is straight and narrow and quick (with a .46 FX) while the Tiger is mellow and can be whatever you want.

Hope this helps.

I went with a Something Extra, really wild though, and a HUGE learing curve...I do use G2 sim though and that helps...anyway, from what I have seen, the sig 4* series is good second, plus it is a tail dragger and when you get used to that you can clip one bay of the end of each wing and make it LOADS quicker and much more acrobatic..just a thought

Also check out the WM Super Sports range - depends a bit on what motor you have.

Also, are you comfortable with your trainer, or are you about to pop the rubber bands because you are doing loops, flying inverted and seemingly trying to get that poor plane to knife edge, even though you know that it will not.....if so then it is time to move up...BUT, if not ANY PLANE you move up to will not act like a trainer..I know of none that is JUST above a trainer in flying behaivor.. trainer has lots of dihedriel and a flat bottom wing. those 2 features at one time will dissapear with any plane you get... GOOD LUCK AND HAVE FUN

I am currently reviewing an Aerobat by Midwest. It is an excellent second plane if you want to start learning aerobatics. The CGM Tiger is also very good.

The Great planes stick series are great second planes. I had the big stick 40 and it flew great. The Sig 4* series is a great second plane also. I have a 4*60 and it is my favorite plane. It will do everything that I am able to do right now. It is very stable and will slow down great for landings. Great plane for a second one.

I agree with the previous posts. The SIG Four star series is VERY nice. I have a 120 and a 60 and I am very happy with both of them. The trick with the second plane is to learn to handle a low wing configuration. That is a difference but you will have a lot of fun practising.

If you are flying your trainer with confidence and you have your eye on the Tiger 60, then go for it. Have someone fly it for you the first time to make sure it's trimmed out, and then accept any assistance until you're comfortable with it. It will make a terrific second plane...........

The Tiger .60 is a great choice for a second plane. It will land as easy as your trainer. Once you get used to it move the CG back a little and it will do some aero. Also it can be built as a tail dragger or tricycle. You might put it together as a trike and convert it later.
good luck daveo

Big Stick

I have a B S .40 size with a 70 Surpass in it. I love flying this airplane.
Everybody should have a Stick.

P.S. It will knife edge and flat spin.

the big stik, it is the best flying plane ever(its been around about 30 years and they still sale like hotcakes tell ya somthing) anyways they are able to fly slow like a trainer, fast llike a racer, easy to fly in wind, very aerobatic for its design, ive gotten some 3d out of mine and some damn good hovers too. its the best all in one. i would get the .60 and put a satio 72 on it for the torque. one more thing build it as tail dragger for best results in fun

A Stick of some sort.

I had a Thunder Tiger Stick for my 2nd . Still have it.

After that, for a low winger like the Goldberg Tiger you mention or a World Models Super Sports .40 or Sig 4 star (either the .40 or.60)

PT19 by great planes, it's not a 3D plane but it's a lot of fun to fly, lands like a traner. flat bottom wing with dihedriel . large plane.

Just my two cents, but I went with an Extra 300S 58" w/s, 60 size as my second plane. It is an ARF from Vector Flight. I have only put about 6 flights on it thus far but it is really easy to take-off and land. In fact the first and second flights on it were dead-sticks. The first was not so good but no damage and the second was a perfect landing. You can bring it in either fast or slow........it flies slow really well. If you get something like it just set your throws to 1/2 or less of what is recommended and you should not have any problems. After you get better with it then start to increase the throws in small increments. If you haven't done so you may also want to ramp up the throws on your trainer, it'll be a little more interesting to fly.

My second plane was the World Models Super Stunts 60 and with its huge wing (80") it floated better then my Avistar did. The WM SS60 does not care where it flies at, it will fly anywhere and is great in winds that most other planes would not fly in. Oh and one other thing that it offers easy viewing again its large wing. Did I mention that you can also enter big bird events with it.

I have had my over three years now and have since converted it over to a tail dragger and man does that make a difference.
