Default 30cc Slipstream Beaver

Hi Folks-

I just picked up a 30cc De Haviland Beaver from Ohio Model Planes over the weekend and thought I'd share it with you'all. I haven't seen anything on this airplane prior to picking it up, which is a shame. this thing is bueatiful. I started the build two night ago, and already have the wings finished, except for mounting the clevis. The control surfaces are done, and the engine is mounted. If you're intrested in the build, drop me a post and i'll share everything i know. Here are a few pics of it's current status.

Hope to hrer from ya
Donnie

I just bought one last week . Didn't come with an instruction book . I found one online this week but
it sure is poor . I can't even find a parts list . I haven't had time to get into it yet . Is the wing one piece
or two ? I plan on using a DLE 30 for power but the balance will decide .

Sorry I have'nt posted anything lately. But I've been busy with kids and their sports. Anyway, just to answer a few questions. The one I received didn't have a manual either, but if you have built an ARF before, the manual is just another book with pictures. I found the CG to fall about 2.75 to 3 inches from the LE. and the control throws were about the same as any other pattern flyer. The ignition is mounted behind the firewall and both batteries are behind the fuel tank. Perhaps they could be mounted a little further aft, but I plan on using this as a float plane latter and need the stability. Parts list... The only thing i needed thas wasn't provided was 2 24" servo extentions, switches, batteries, and radio gear. I used Hitec 645MG's all around and a Hitec 425 for throttle. This ,in my opinion, seems to be plenty. As far as power, I have a CRRC 26 on mine, and it has enough power to do almost anything but hover. A 30cc will be plenty enough power to hover with floats hanging from the fusealage. The wing is a one piece, but if you are willing to try, you can make the wings mount to the center hatch with 2 dow pins and nylon bolts. Just be careful not to go too far back behind the main spar as there isn't much stregnth there. As far as flying, I take off about half power, fly a few scale manuvers, then I power up and fly it like a trainer on steroids. I mixed flaps into the allerions and it will fly about as fast as a fast walking pace. One thing I can say is, if you have ever flown a Cub or Taylercaft, then this airplane will be just as comfortable to fly but alot more agile, and powerful.

Please ask me anymore questions you have as I'm sure I forgot something. By the way, I'll have a video to post aswell as soon as i can find someone to hold the camera for me. (Kinda hard to fly and video at the same time)

Thanks for that Donnie. Great report. Did those wheels come with the model and could it be flown without the sturts?

No the weels are aftermarket. I put the weels on to make it look more like a bush plane. As far as the struts, I haven't flown the Beaver without them because I like to fly it as hard and extreme as I can. Here are a few more photos.

Not yet.. But I've been looking at Sea Comander floats, and building retracts into them for both land and water use. We're still trying to figure out the best way to accomplish this. More to come on this topic.. But the best thing about this ARF is that they already built in the aft support for floats. (rumor has it that EG might have a float system in the future.)

The best thing about a nice Beaver is when you take it to the flying field,, all the other guys are admiring your beaver and some may be just a bit jelious. It happens everywhere.

What engine did you install ? How did the cg. work out ? How far is the engine away
from the firewall ? Do you have any pictures of the engine installation ?

That is one sweet Beaver! It almost makes the messy garage look good. I wish I helped build it then I could leave a trademark like the good old CA fingerprints on the windows! Actually I am jealous, as always you build a plane then I want it. So I am going to have to save up and get one. I am looking forward to seeing it fly in person.

I used a CRRC por 26cc and it pulls it just fine. If you put a 30cc on it, it'll have more than enough power to hover. As far as the CG, I measured 2 3/8" back from the L.E. This puts it a little nose heavy but it works for my use. The back of the prop hub is 5 1/4" from the fire wall. The next time I take the cowling off, I'll take some pictures for you. I hope this helps you out.

J.T.- thanks for calling me out on my messy garage. You know I had help with that. But I'll clean it up just for you.

Hi Brian-

The Beaver has been flying great. I've put about 15 or so flights on it since my last post and it has been flying perfectly. I did have an unexpected event yesterday with it, on my third flight apperently the right alleron servo lead came unpluged and i didn't notice it until i was trying to do one wheel landings. I pluged it back in and all is well. As far as a store front, no we don't have a store. But you can call John @ OMP and talk to him if you want to swing by his house and pick one up. Just go to the wbe site http://www.ohiomodelplanes.com and the phone number is under the contact tab. I hope this helps.

Happy Flying

Donnie

Yea that was a ugly job on th cowl. I have since replaced it. Now I'm building floats with retracts installed in the floats. hope to have this done by the Toledo show.

Sigman- the Beaver I built was from http://www.ohiomodelplanes.com/.
