Looking for a medium sized Yak
Hi,
I was looking for a medium sized yak- something under 30cc for some 3d flying. I was thinking getting a Aeroworks Yak 90-120 and putting a OS GT33 or DLE20 on it. A friend suggested getting a GP Yak 25%. I know this is larger- 33cc. So which one is better- sturdier, better hardware etc?

RE: Looking for a medium sized Yak
Thats a good one MinnFlyer. Its cheap to run and little maintainence. But I cant fly it, put it away on my loft and I am not sure she will go in the same direction I move the stick
I was tending towards the Aeroworks Yak as it is about 62" in length and due to their reputation of making good builds

Hey Ameyam,
I'd recommend the Aeroworks 90-120 too, but I would put a DLE30 in it, especially if you like 3D flying. You cannot go wrong with an Aeroworks ..............

Ameyam, another great looking excellent flying yak for 30cc is the Pilot RC yak. it is price quite a bit more than the Aeroworks,
but is designed for 30cc gas power, I have had some experience with Pilot and there are as nice and built as well as the AW

If 3D is your aim, the Pilot RC will be lighter than the AW. If durability is important, the AW is built a little beefier at the expense of some weight.
If you really want to fly 3D get a Red Aero MXS-R it will be lighter than either one of them.

RE: Looking for a medium sized Yak
IF 3D is what you really want to do and the Yak shape (LEts face it - very few RC models are even close to true scale) is what you want and 20cc or 30cc is the size range of what you want.
Wrongway RC has some excellent planes in this size range that will 3D better than any of the above mentioned planes.
The only minus is that you may have to overcome your personal prejudice because they are profiles
Oh - for Minnflyers Yaks? At least they can provide the main ingredient for a Tea and they can be eaten after the crash (BBQ Sauce anyone?)

RE: Looking for a medium sized Yak
Don't overlook Seagull ARFs while shopping.
I just completed a Seagull Yak 54 (90 size)and mounted a 20cc gas engine. I haven't flown it yet but, have seen two others fly at our club. One has a DLE20cc and the other has a .120 four stroke. Both fly with great authority ....aerobatics and 3D.
This is the 3rd Seagull ARF I've built and can truly say they are worth every penney. They produce a quaity plane.
They come with everything you need to complete the airframe and the hardware is good. Of course, the hardware is easily upgraded if you don't care for that provided. Iupgraded from the CA hinges to pinned hinges and used rods for the pull/pull rudder and clamp connectors on the control horns rather than the provided wire.
Horizon Hobby has them listed for about $199 but, I paid a few bucks less at my LHS and carried it home the same day. It never hurts to shop around.

RE: Looking for a medium sized Yak
Just sold a seagull yak 90, good acroplane with limited 3das to heavy. Sold it to get a pilot yak 26% with dle 30, second hand but has 6 flights on frame and engine.
My seagull was 10.5 lbs with 20cc, the pilot is huge in comparison and is about 12.5 lbs with the dle30. I have not flown the pilot yet but clearly the wing loading and power to weight ratio is going to be a huge step towards a better flying 3d plane. I can only imagine that the bigger theyare the better they get for 3d. But I am no expert and my flying skills at 3d are almost zero but hope to improve them this year.
Both planes are built well but was amazed at the hardware and attention to detail with the cowl fitment and painting on the pilot yak.
If you are really looking for full 3d the seagull yak is not the 20cc plane you want, its a good plane but simply to heavy. Maybe a profile would suit you, thats the road I would have liked to take but they are hard to get over here without paying a stupid price for import.
