hello everyone, have a question my my muffler with the gp planes cessna i put the 46fx and a pitts style muffler, but the to exhaust pipes coming off the muffler one of them is right in line with the nose gear. There is maybe a 1/4 inch clearence from the top. I was wondering would it be okay to cut that one pipe say a 1/4 inch off of it and put a exhaust deflector on there made from dubro to keep the fuel and all off of the wheel pants and wheel thanks mike

Mike, I would not only cut it off but try plugging it. I have seen several .40 engines lean out with a pitts muffler. Sometimes there is not enough back pressure with both pipes open. When you get it done hold it vertical at 1/2 power and see if it leans out.
good luck, david

alright if i cut this pipe and plug it. what would be the effect of just the one remaining pipe open, would it cause to much back pessure and harm the engine or would it be alright, since i have never seen one done like that, i just would'nt want to ruin a 34.00 muffler along with a engine just wondering. thanks mike

Mike, If you look at the stock muffler the opening is probably about the same size as one of your stacks on the pitts. To much back pressure can hurt performance, but should not hurt the engine. To really do it right test it as follows. Bench mount the engine. Run some RPM test with the stock muffler. Then test the pitts with and without one side plugged. You will need a tach for this. You can make a good bench mount by cutting a U shape in the end of an old board and mounting the engine in there with wood screws. Then clamp it in a vice or screw it to a Pacific table. Hold the tank to the board with rubber band and run a throttle cable. If this is more than you want to tackle the exhaust deflector will work fine. I was only trying to nip a problem in the bud. When it's time to test fly it make sure it wont lean out with the nose pointed up. later david
