Default RE: 50CC REVOLVER!!

Guys:
I sorted out the asymmetry in elevator throws; thanks to all for suggestions.
There were probably several things at work:

1 - I did not have the servo arms -exactly- at 90* at neutral, so fixed that with subtrim
2 - I had somehow set the end points differently for the two servos: 140/140 on the left, and 120/120 on the right - about 10%

Elevator throws are now perfect, to the 1/16th inch, as are the aileron throws. I kept the 1 1/4" servo arms. I have 50* up and down elevator on Max Rates, 12* and 25* on low and high rates respectively. The elevator halves track exactly together throughout the travel.

One more setup detail to file in my old mind to check.

NOW, she is ready to maiden!

Thanks again for the suggestions.

Taildragger:

Measurements:

Gear spread: 23 1/2''
Gear height (axle->mount): 8:
Depth of main gear (fore-aft): 1 3/4''

Very slight sweep back, which you can see in the pics; my guess is a non-swept gear would work fine

Bill
Wow...that is minimal sweep. I think you are right about a gear that is not swept back. That does give many more possibilities as far as gear go. It will all really depend on fuselage width and drilling the mount holes and a set of light but strong carbon fiber should be fine. That way you don't have to spend an arm and a leg for a set of gear.

Sometimes we don't think about the additional costs that we put into a plane that we think is a bargain. If you spend close to a hundred for gear then that rockets the price of the plane up to a comparible model. Anyway, thanks for the picture very helpful when thinking about future purchase. I have some gear on hand that might fit this bird if I should decide to buy one when the funds come available.

Nice detail work; how exactly did you do the rivets? What material did you use for the non-slip on the wing root?

Mike:
Will get her out either today, or not until this weekend. I have some interfering business travel []

The elevator travel issue was a real rookie mistake that i did not want to admit, but since i asked for help, i thought i should get the true solution out there.

Luchnia - i agree that almost any carbon gear about that size should work. Just drill to fit the blind nuts already there.

Has anyone put a 50cc or so sized twin cylinder engine in the GP Revolver yet?
I was curious as to how the engine fit in with the cowl or not.

I looked at doing that with a DLE60, the the cylinder - to - cylinder distance exceeded the width of the cowl at the FW; cowl would be more narrow forward of the FW.
I gave up on the twin idea personally.

Thanks for the comments
I use #2 x 3/16 button head screws to simulate rivets and I use skateboard grip tape for the wing walk area. Also PROMARK chrome vinyl for various small details. I have recently done a sukhoi and a extra with scale rivet locations ..this one was fun because I got to use my imagination instead of following a scale drawing . check out the thread with posting your "favorite arf" for sukhoi pics

Guys:
Brief maiden flight report; only had time for 1 flight after work today.

One word summary: WOW

Ground handling is great; i typically maneuver on high (not max) rates to get acceptable rudder / tail wheel throw. She tracked well, turned well; no bad habits.

Took off into a 7 mph wind at 45* to the runway. My practice is to advance the throttle from idle to WOT over the course of about 10 seconds; She took off at about 1/2 throttle, and climbed smoothly despite the crosswind component.

2 clicks up, 3 clicks R aileron had her tracking S&L at 2/3 throttle. Yaw trim was perfect.

Presentation is quite good; i had overcast skies which can obliterate detail and make orientation hard. Top of wings show well with dark tips; bottom of wings show well with the horizontal stripes.

My CG is 3/8" aft of recommended. Dynamic CG was right where I like it: she curled very slightly to the horizon in an inverted 45* upline at 2/3 throttle. Perfect.

It was a new engine so i did not push her hard. Low rates for the entirety of the flight. No snaps, spins, hammerheads, etc. Aileron rolls are axial, which is surprising given the semi-symmetrical wing. My low rate roll rate is about 360*/sec. i expected that on a triple roll, the nose would be moving towards the horizon at the end of the roll, but that was not the case. Standard stuff like half cuban 8's (normal and reverse), immelmanns, split S, etc are fine. My low rates (by design) will not cause a snap. On the inside loop, she tracked well, with no tendency to fall off to either side. I have not done the outside loop yet, as my new engine seems a bit sensitive to 'g' forces.

Knife edge coupling was very nearly zero. Will have to fly those more to dial it in, but it will not be more than a percent or two one way or the other for the rudder->elev mix.

I flew flaperons and spoilerons at about 1/3 throttle, just above approach speed. Flaperons, predictably, make controls mushy, but do slow down the airframe perceptably; I will probably not use them much. Spoilerons definitely kill lift and could come in handy if you have a short field, etc. Control surface response seems to be preserved.

Like her smaller sister the R70, the R90 carries speed well and continues to fly with low airspeed. Even with an idle of 1700rpm (10 pitch prop), it took several approaches for me to get her down, as the wind had gone to zero, but with good energy management (throttle and approach altitude) she settled nicely into a 3 point landing.

It will be several days before i can get her out to the field again. Definitely a keeper.

It is not the aerobat that my AW Extra 300 is, nor does it have the vertical performance of the much lighter PHP Extra 260, but this R90 flies beautifully.

wjc;
Congrats on your maiden flight!!! You make me want to clean off the work table and start the build on my R90, but I have a Seagull Model Cessna 336 and a Top Flite 60 Spitfire kit that I have to finish first!!! She will be ready for spring!!!
Again congrats on your maiden flight!!!
