What kind of servos are you all using on the elevators of your GP Pitts? I'll be starting the Great Planes Christen Eagle when it arrives and am curious what kind of torque folks have been applying to the elevator halves on the Pitts. I'm guessing 50-70 oz-in per elevator would be enough, but please let me know. I'd planned on using an 8411 for the rudder and some Hitec 475HB's on the elevators, but would like to decide which way to go. Thanks!

Hi Ron. I am using Hitec 475HB's on all four ailerons. These servos have 76 oz. of torque using a 6 volt battery. For the elevators & rudder I'm using Hitec 645MG's which have 133 oz. of torque. I've been using Hitec servos on pretty much all my planes and I've been very happy with the results.

I used the hitec 645s, 4 on ailerons, 2 on elevators & 2 on rudder. They all worked really well but if I had to do it again I think I would use a faster servo. I think the 645 travel @ .23 secs, If I did it again I would use something with about .14 sec travel & probably use some hitec digitals.

I have the Gp Pitts
I am using a G62

also all rocket city hardware why??? because you can bend 440 rod and I havein flight
so do scrimp if you want to tumble??

I put together a GP Pitts using the folowing...
OS 300 Super Gemini Twin
Slimline Pitts muffler
Futaba PCM receiver
Seven Futaba S9151 Digital servos
One Futaba 3003 for throttle
Ram Onboard Glow Driver
EMS Battery Backup system
Charlie Hillard Graphics
This is one of the sweetest flying airplanes that I have ever flown. It does most any manuever at 1/2 throttle and the sound is awsome!!!

If you are worried about price then get hitec 625's. I'm using 5625 digitals @ 130 oz torque on all surfaces. Better safe than sorry! You want at least 70 oz torque per surface and 100 on the rudder. Model Airplane News had a great article about a year ago showing required servo torque on different size planes. It was a great guide. ALso try to use metal gear.
You should'nt skimp on 18# planes!!!!!

well, I was thinking JR 2721's on all surfaces for my new Christen Eagle and JR 531's on throttle and choke. The JR 2721's are metal geared, 116 oz torque at 4.8V and .18 sec travel .
Another option (servos I have already) would be JR 4721's on the elevator, but they are not metal geared and a little slower then the 2721. Plenty strong and this way I won't have to buy 2x 2721's.
What do you guys think about the 4721's for elevator ? to slow ?
What are you battery choices ? are you guys using 2 batteries for the radio gear or just one ?

Using Futaba 9405's metal geared with 80 oz. torque. 0.14 speed in 4 ailerons, elevators and rudder. Used two channels for the elevators mixing Ch 2+7 Using 9202 for choke and S148 for throttle on a DA 50. Removed the throttle spring so the throttle moves very easily with zero resistance. The choke and throttle servo are on a servo tray behind the fuel tank and under the smoke system tray. Three servos in the tail. Using Med. sized Ohio Superstar tail wheel with a 440 rod and direct connection to the rudder servo. No pull pull.
Using a 1700 Mah Nicd for the servos, 1100 Mah Nicd for the electronic ignition and 1100 Mah Nicd for the smoke system (Simple Smoke). Also using a 'Battery Backer' for the servos and smoke as a back up with three battery switches. Using a heavy duty toggle kill switch from B&B. Mounting 24 oz. Dubros fuel tank and 24 oz. Dubros smoke tank. The smoke tank is behind the fuel tank on a smoke system tray slightly forward of the CG. The Simple Smoke system is mounted on the tray with the tank. Futaba PCM 8 channel RX mounted just forward of the cockpit.
Used this same set up on Pitts-I with a Fuju 50. The engine was much heavier and the CG worked out like I wanted it being just a bit nose heavy. On the Fuji I had the throttle mounted on the box. The servo tray with the added choke servo should help offset the weight of the lighter DA engine on Pitts-II.
