Can't seem to make a link work. Something wrong with RCU maybe? It turns a bunch of characters in my link into ************* and won't let me post a real link. Paranoid of another rc airplane website, perhaps?

Giants of Flying?

That's in the language filter due to a centuries old feud. Not really paranoid, at the time it was warranted, though today, most of the people that were involved are gone.

Seems like a very mature feud. Anyway, I'll find some VVRC40 installation pics at some point.

Hey Y'all, I have a Saito 180 that needs a job. What do you think, good choice for this plane? I really like the Beaver, but don't quite understand that engine mounting plug-in thingy. If it would fit, would it have to be inverted?

I am flying the Beaver with the VVRC 40 CC Twin. Runs great, good power for wheels. Have not mounted floats yet. Floats are heavy. We will see how it does.

The Evo 33 flys it with floats, trust me the VV won't have any issues hauling the floats around.

Default So outacontrol41,,,

I gotta know..since this is my thread,,haha,,why,,since you had the cowl split, you didnt open it up and fill the split to acconidate the 400?... this is what I did,,,and it has been done over and over....no need to cut all those holes...before you get to far...patch your holes,,and give it another shot... first....

1 ... split the cowl on the bottom... only after you place wax paper and lay down 2 layers of glass to get the shape...
2 .... place the cowl over the engine on a table and glue in some spreaders to keep the cowl open..
3 .... use the piece that you layed up as the filler...and glass the inside to keep it all together......Paint
4. .... install cowl "Over" the engine,,,cut out exhaust, fueler , and needle valve. and your done

here is mine...and it looks and fits perfect,,,not "Perfect" scale,,,,but it does look nice...

I admit your rig does look nice although I can't see the backside (pilot's view) of your cowl. My issue was and is the major gap I have between the cowl and the fuse once the engine and cowl are in place...see the 10th photo. Even if I did split the cowl and spread it over the cylinders it would a), open the gap on each side so massively it would not look scale and b), the cowl would still be pushed back as far as it will go and still leave that gap shown in pic #10. The difference between us may be we're using different radial engines. The rocker arms on the OS really stick out....I'd have a lot bigger gap at the bottom to fill. But still, it won't look too bad. When I got the plane my first plan was to not use the cowl at all... but then I said "nah" it deserves better than that".

We are using the same engine...OS or Magnum 400 5 cyl... they are the same engine, size, different name.. The cowl DOES come down a little further under the fuse,,,but the top of it is dead on...When I said not perfect scale,, i meant it..it does hang down a little further,,, but it is hard to notice it,,,Guys don't come up to me and say,,,hey your cowl looks a little big... they just say ...NICE..with a radial even!!...all smiles..I was just try'n to help ya...you talk about scale placements,,,but you have 5 valve covers sticking out of the cowl.....my post above yours shows the engine in the cowl and the spread with the filler...again,,,,let me be clear,,,I don't mean any disrespect,,, but when I was shown how to do this,,I knew it was a great and easy way to go...not only that,, it looks like it was meant for it..like I said... just hope'n to help...people sometimes get offeneded by others wanting to help them,,,I love it,,in fact thrive on it!!.. So I always blast my 2 cents..hahaha..

No disrespect taken. Always appreciate advice when given with good intentions. We will have slightly different looking planes due to our different angles of attack...but it's all good.
Just to be clear on my objective:..I'm not shooting for a 100% scale look...just something that looks good and flies reasonably well. All said and done, the rocker arm covers will stick out only a little and I might just paint them a matching color where appropriate on the cowl. I know it's not the same plane but the Waco has it's cylinders sticking out...it's really not a big deal to me. I will post pics of the final outcome. I mounted the engine but still have to buy the receiver and servos. Placing an order with TH tomorrow. Curious what others are using for servos? I'm a Futaba guy.

I broke my Beaver. A123 battery problem. Can you guys tell me what type, capacity, and how many receiver batteries you're using? I'm thinking of going with dual LiFePO4 6.6V 2200mAh pazcks to have 4000+ mAs. Separate switches, separate ign battery.

Yeah- they're very needy, it seems. I use NiMH packs in the Super Cub. I thought it might be time to get modern.

Interesting comments about the LiFe packs. I run real A123 packs and haven't had a battery issue directly related to them in years. Even the pack that failed on Jeep, i have run his packs in review and personal planes and haven't had any problems.

I'd be interested to know what failed.

I suspect it was the Onyx 245 charger that failed. I'm willing to go A123 again. Recommend a solid charger, preferably AC/DC.

I think I've settled on dual A123 2500mAh packs and a CellPro Multi4 charger. Can't be too safe by getting a new charger! If I order my A123 packs with CellPro taps then I can balance charge using the balance leads only, which is another benefit of A123 packs from WrongwayRC. Order whatever leads you want, he'll make them quick and ship 'em out. If I'm going to use dual rx packs should I just plug them both into separate rx ports, or combine them with something, like a Wolverine switch? 2S A123 packs don't need to be regulated for Spektrum receivers can easily handle that voltage, as can my servos. What am I missing here, anything? Or is it time to order up and get that new Beaver in the air?

I would use dual inputs to the rx, and if you got them from Rich you can get external balance charge jacks which is the way to go.

That's my plan. If you ever get a black DX9 in for review, and you don't want to keep it, well, let me know.
