Has anyone found a pilot that fits well in this model? I picked up a Great Planes 1/4 scale SPortsman pilot at the LHS, and it is too tall for the canopy. The 1/5 scale looks way too puny for this plane.

What are you guys using? Do you just cut down a 1/4 scale pilot?

Has anyone installed a zenoah g62 in this airframe? If so what were your results? I am currently in the process of finishing this instalation and other than I already know that the wing loading is a little high and the effects this should have on the flight qualities was just curiose. Thanks

heavy wingload what.. this thing is a floater. i sold mine but when i had it with the os 160 it landed as easy as a big stik. i dont know of anybody though with a big gasser like that on it. my buddy with a patty has a 43 gas on that. the patty is bigger though. to be honest i think the os 160 is the perfect match for this plane. remember this really isnt a 3d machine.

Thanks again for the input gives a little hope for not wasting my time preparing a brick for flight. Gman you are already familiar with this plane as I purchased it from a member here on RCU that had been talking to you and others earlier in this post. Gapple12 On page 40 and following. Had the SPE 40 installed when I bought it and performed well but after a dozen or so flights encountered the dreaded crank shaft shear that led to a dead stick on my own landing strip which I had been off of 3 times. Not having the feel for the approach lines fully under my belt came in a little hot on the only shot I was going to get and touched a wing tip on the unfinished embankment which has led to this repair and the only other power plant I had available was my trusty g62.So thanks again for all your information as I can now rest a little easier with the forsight you have provided. Just as an encouragement, I have a DA-50 in my Soucy and it flies great... lands great... flips and flops great... and pulls out of a hover no problem.
It is my opinion that this plane can take quite a bit of wieght and still fly great. I'm sure the 'hard-core' 3d'ers would disagree, but what can I say. I'm fly'n it and lov'in it!

Hello raston, Do you know what your weight is?I had to put 15oz. in the rear hatch under the servos to get it balanced. went with the original mag ign. as it has served me well and is no a problem to hand start. Can't wait to finish, with christmas right here it will probably be after the holiday.Guess it just goes to show Fat Girls Can Dance and they do.Thanks for the input good talking to you.

stingerg64 I dont mean to tell you what to do but you can move your fuel tank back to CG line It will help . I did not have to add any weight to tail . My 6volt batt & Rec. is at and behind wing anchor brace

Just went and wieghed it. It came out at 16.8 pounds according to my digital fish scale. Of course that's after having to rebuild the landing gear area, which was the result of a poorly executed deadstick landing into in the brush at the end of the runway. If memory serves, i think it was originally approx 16.4 pounds before the repair. That includes Extra tall TNT landing gear - which I highly reccomend, as the original gear is too soft and bends easily when you start to push the wieght up. Knowing that the engine wieght would means a but of a CoG challenge, I did a little mod and moved the fuel tank back and butted it up against the servo tray. That put the rear of the tank roughly on the CoG. I mounted the ignition batt back there as well, and I putt the receiver batt back in the tail hatch behind the Elev & Rudd servos (used heavy guage wire to extend the batt lead so to avoid any voltage drop/current loss). The ignition module is mounted in the usual place on the engine box. So even after the extra wieght of the repair, I only have 1.5 oz of lead zip-tied to the tail gear.

Hope that info is usefull to you.

G-Man Had already moved the tank to the C/g line and centered on it. Use a 6 cell Nimi for the rx and mounted it in a center hatch between the tail gear and the wing mount but the advise is well taken and appreciated.

Gman... I'm currently running 2.4 ghz which 'they' say is not affected by ignition noise. However, I was running plain old FM in the past and never had a problem.

Hello raston /GMAN just wanted to give you guys a flight report. Finally got a break in the weather to put in a flight or two the wind was only blowing around 10 knots in gusts which is a improvement over the steady 20 knots for the past 2 weeks. The plane flew fine it is a little on the high side of the wing load for slow maneuvers but it has unlimited vertical and as long as you keep the speed up it is stable half throttle loops will get a tip stall every time 3/4 throttle very quick but clean loop full throttle start to worry about the stock wing tube and if it can take that kind of pressure but still fun. raston you are correct about the landing gear as I can see that if you set it down to hard you could bend the stock gear just from watching the flex when it lands. Have to land a little hotter to keep from stalling not bad just different with the added weight. I look foward to more time with it in a little calmer weather but I thought I would let you know all is good and thank you both for your time and imput. Stay in touch Stingerg64

Carl

What engine are you using? Have an OS 1.60 2s & a Saito 1.80 fs. Which do you think would be best?
