dos anybody has experience w/ gas eng' for Kat?
BTW, how do you hook up front retention spring? [&o]
do i have to spend a couple of days working with hatch modification?

I have just cut the firewall in my Katana for a Roto 35 from RCS showcase. If I had it to do over again I would have gone with the Brison as it is 1.2 lbs lighter and similar thrust.
As to the hatch mods, no, you don't have to but it is easy to do and you will have a much much easier time of it when it comes to field assembly. Those springs in front of the wing tube are a bear to get to if your hands are as clumsy as mine.

mudspike
A plane with such little wing and a gas engine will fly, it will just not be too much fun for 3d, heavy aerobatics, and landing....you might just have a mudspike LOL!
I learned a lot in the hobby about wieght, you want this plane to come in at 12lbs TOTAL or less, 10.5 lbs would be cherry. With this gas engine you will be in the 13.5-14.5 range, does not sound like much, but enough to cause high speed stalls, no 3D, and fast landings.
OS 1.60. Saito 1.80, Moki 1.80 are the only choices for this plane.
Areobatic planes for the 2.4 - GP extra 300 78" Patty, H9 Atallia CAP 80", DP extra or Edge 78" or anything else with 1200 + inches of wing area
good luck

Not true, the Roto 35 is measured as all up wieght 3.8lbs WITH ignition and muffler, the Brison 2.4 is measure on the site as 2.75 bare. I had a brison 2.4, it tipped the scales at just over 4 lbs with ign and muffler.
FYI, this plane should have a MVVS 1.8 gas or similar

On what do you base your info? Do you have one of these planes? I do so I'll tell you what: You post pic's of yours and I'll post some pic's of mine, including the engine which weighs significantly more then my ZDZ 40 which weighs more then my friends Brison that comes in at 2.8 lbs without the muffler.
I think his muffler weighs all of 2.5-3 oz. so it's still lighter then my Roto. I'm not really one to get into a *&$%'in contest with people on msg boards but I do get kinda tired of always hearing "you gotta do this" or "you can't do that" when it comes to these planes, 'specially if the guy on the other end doesn't even have one to use as an example. Everyone told me I couldn't use a gas engine on the Sig Extra I built and now everyone that see's it fly is just amazed at how well it flies and how easily it lands. Sometimes it is easier to just watch and see rather then jump to conclusions. I may make suggestions and recommendations but I don't think you will ever hear me tell anyone that there limited to three choices of engine for anything.
Mudspike, if you have the Brison, try it if you wanna, don't if you don't wanna. Or maybe put a fuel guzzleing glow motor on it and fly it that way. Your plane, your choice and your wallet. For that matter, buy two and try both ways. I got a buddy building one with an OS 1.50 and another flying it with a YS 1.40. Still a 3rd is flying it with a big thunder tiger engine. You'll never know 'till you try.

Hi Cstevec~
many thanks for yr encouragement~.
o.k i'll go w/ Brison first and Saito150 as an alternative which is currently powering my 1600mm Extra.
at first i was plan on installing Li-Po for both servo and ignition but on sesond thought... think it would be better go w/ Ni-Mh to
secure proper CG.
guess i could post flying video by of next week somewhere of my web page.
everything's ready except installation of engine and i'm currently working on hatch modification...
BTW, it's always easier to ask first than do little search..
a minutes of search revealed that someone has a zdz40 in it. hee hee.
what a relief~~[8D]

From: Gaston, OR,
mine weighs in at 11 lbs. 4 oz. that is with a 2 lb motor so I think with a 3 lb. motor gasser is still in the cards GO for it and keep us posted, prime example the h9 cap with same 2 lb. motor weighs 13.5 lbs with just a smidge more wing area 60 sq. in and it flies great so if your wing loading is under what my cap is you will love it.

I have spent thousands of dollars on this very subject!
Do I have a Katana.....NO, have I tried gas engines on planes in this range.....yes!!!! Could I fly them....yes! Do they fly like they should and were designed for NO NO NO
3D is the hottest topic, new planes are on the way with 85" of wing and AUW of 14.5 lbs with a 50 cc, why do you think this is?????? BECAUSE LIGHT IS RIGHT WHEN IT COMES TO AIRPLANES.
To list a few ex planes of mine
1. sig 300xs with 2.4 last flown with super tigre 1.4 glow
2. lanier Edge 540t with 2.4 last flown with saito 1.80
3 H9 Edge 540t with 2.4 sold as is
4 GP Patty wag extra with 3.2 awaiting moki 2.10
5 DP ultimate with RCS 1.40 now has Satio 1.50
All of the above planes flew BETTER with glow engines, not a little better ALOT BETTER, As for experience try this on for size, I fly a 1/3 scale cap 232 with a zdz80, 22.5 lbs, building a FC 35% with a BME 110 to be 25lbs, my DP ultimate is in a 10.5 lbs LIGHT IS RIGHT!!!
As for your sig extra, try it at 11 lbs with a light engine, will it have the verticle of the gas, no But it will 3d, not have high speed stall issues, flat spin slow and in control without racing to the ground.
An aerobatic plane should not fly like a warbird
You want pics to compare???? I do not think you can "hang" my friend, this hangar is STOCKED!
