Default Hots Performance

Okay, how does a hot hots perform aerobatic wise. I'm primarily concerned with flatspins and inverted etc. Knife edges are pluses....so on and so forth.

Is yours a modified version or standard from the plans. I have one that was scratch built for me, and the tail surfaces we enlarged by about 10%.

It wont flat spin as easily or as neatly as a 3-D plane, but its not bad. Knife edge is allright, but you need a prop with good thrust, I am using a 15x4W APC on mine, MVVS .91 engine with tuned pipe.

Inverted is smooth and stable.

Yup, what he said.

I had 3/4 of an inch added to my elevators, and left the rudder alone.

The wing hates to stall, hence the less than stellar snaps and spins. Inverted is a breeze, and KE is OK,but also not stellar by fun fly standards. The fuselage side area isn't as big as it really needs.

The Hots dates back to when a fun fly was to loop and roll as fast as possible. That part of our hobby has grown, and the Hots has changed a bit to reflect that. I doubt the Hots will ever turn into a pure 3D maching and keep it's looks. I love the look of the Hots, and can easily forgive it's short comings. It's a great design, and a good plane.

One of the best things about this plane is its stability. Makes it so easy to recover when things go wrong.

In fact the guy who scratch builds these over here actually uses it as a trainer, teaches people to fly with the 40 size version.

King, if you can perform the maneuvers with the Hots, you'll find that almost any fun-fly/3D plane will be a breeze to handle. The Hots is really good for learning aerobatics, as you can recover from almost anything.

This plane was developed as a fun-fly machine. and can easily be turned into a 3d `er by simply enlarging the control surfaces slightly. 10-15 percent should be adequate. I used to find that the rudder was too tall during low inverted passes down the runway and had to grind it down a bit using the pavement.
This plane is much better suited for 3d than a Lancair...
With the right thumbs. a "Hots" can do about every 3d maneuver in the book.

I have had three of these over the years and loved them. I was hovering one with a OS61 Pumper on it about 10 years ago.

As for 3D, maybe cause I only have one right thumb, I couldn't get it to do the stuff the 3D ARF's of today CANDO :-)
