OK, so I need a new plane... I'd like warbirds, but anything else is OK. I have the P47 in my mind but its very expensive and rare. So I am asking for ideas for a 4th plane...?

It would help if we knew what planes you have flown to this point.

If you have had tail dragger experience, I would recommend a Great Planes Shoestring. They fly great, look even better and they are a great airplane.

You say the Shoestring is expensive? My LHS has one for $164.99 The new Hangar 9 Corsair is over $250.

Besides, the plane is incredible. A very good ARF! Although, these comments are my opinion based upon having the plane and flying it over 100 times last season.

The GP Shoe String gets my vote also. It's a "point and fly" kinda plane and its real sexy looking. I always get great reactions to it at the field. It's certainly more fun than the Sig 4stars. As far as cost, you can get it on sale for $200.00. It's worth the price if you can afford it. I fly mine with an OS 61. and a Bisson muffler

Ziggy, you have to notice his location, import duties are very high. A pilot friend moved back to Trinidad and wrote back saying his Hobbico Avistar sells for $500.00 there and $50.00 for a gal. of 10%. We're sorta spoiled here. Even shipping orders from like Tower could double the price.
Csisfun, I'd suggest you look thru World Model plane choices and see if they wouldn't be cheaper.

OoO! The WM 30 sized Ultimate is looking good! Could be too much for me to handle... hmmm

My vote goes for the ultimate. I have a GP 40 size ultimate with a saito 72 on it and it is great. This was my third plane after the trainer and a 4*60. It is very easy to fly and is solid in the air. You have to learn how to land with it bit it is not to difficult. Just keep some power on and it comes in very nice. They glide like a rock. This plane has a very good roll rate and I fly mine on low rates most of the time. It flew well with an OS 46 FX but is much better with the Saito 72. It has ulimited vertical. I love my ultimate and am looking at getting a bigger one. The world models ultimate is a nice plane someone in my club has one and it flies really good on a 46 size engine.

Try a Sig Somethin' Extra its a good flying plane. Smooth on low rates then will get a little wild on high if you want. Good slow fly and pretty acrobatic. I flew mine with a 46fx & 11x7 prop. Good luck whatever you decide.

I wouldn't call it spoiled. We just aren't as willing to give all our money to the government in taxes.

Take a look at the Pheonix .46-size Sukhoi. I had one with a Saito 72...its a great flying plane at a cheap price. Good luck!

OK, i'm back from some "discovery", hmmm... and I was thinking of getting a sport plane.

An Ultimate... Extra 300... Sukhoi... mmm the choices are unlimited. I'll need you guys to guide me to the perfect plane.

Also can these sport planes hover? Maybe I should buy a Modeltech 3d plane... they are dirt cheap!

I happen to make a good comparison between planes that were made in Vietnam.

I wouldn't say the quality is sub-standard. But I own those Great Planes, as you said were relatively more expensive !

Does phoenix or seagull has the Edge 540T series ?

In your opinion, how does the quality from those vietnamese-made planes compared with those Great Planes (made in China) ?
I am seriously considering one.

Uh, im sorry to disappoint you Born To Fly, but I haven't had any of those Great Planes. It's just waaaaay out of my budget.

As for the Vietnamese planes, they are very cheap; and mind you, cheap doesn't mean that it's quality is poor. It seems everyone in my flying group starts out with either a Vietnamese plane or China made plane (not GP). These planes never top $1000 approx. like the Great Planes' planes do. They hang around the $200 range, with some going as low as $103!

The Viet planes caught my eye so had to put my two cents in.
Never before on here did I hear more negative comments as I did the VMAR line.I really like the looks of the VMAR Edge and it was a long time before I shoved the negs in the back of my head and went for it. I even called Kelsey at VMAR and he said that most of the net was negative anyway which is true.I went ahead and got the Edge and that was two years ago and it's still flying and a very stable nice plane.Even if it didn't fly well it was $169 worth of pretty.

VMAR makes the Edge 540 and I really like mine and would buy another especially since they come in four colors now.

Oh yes! Viet planes are total greatness at low cost!

Let's try to assume these are the cost structure of a R/C Design and Manufacturing Company.

(A)- Labour Cost (developing countries with low-cost labour benefit here, geographically perhaps, I would pick China just an example)
(B)- Cost of quality components (high volume order of one component makes a part cost relatively lower, do you have big orders for Balsa wood from Balsa wood exporting countries, is Balsa wood is the primary cost component ?)
(C)- Cost of machinery (wood laser-cut machine/shearing machine)
(D)- Customer Service (a competent and customer-oriented e-mail and telephone hotline to start it all).
(E)- Competitive contract with distributor (carry my products on your website please)
(F)- Freight cost (that's determine your R/C plane at your door). Freight company contract with you.
(G)- Manufacturing sites (are they located at various locations close to Europe, Asia, US to give the most benefits to the customer ? Customer do not want to pay exorbitant prices for freight charges.)
(H) Licensing of brands to various manufacturing sites.
(I) Marketing costs. (think about negative image from bad publicity of an unhappy customer complaint in an active forum like this).

I would be curious to know who has been licensed to manufacture for whatever big names in R/C planes you have in mind.
From there, I get a clue about quality. Do you believe a factory have different skilled operators and machines of different capabilities (accuracy) for different names ? I wouldn't, most probably.

Get a GSP Katana 140 (china model productions Katana). For the $$ its the best flying plane I have ever had as long as you can get past the cheap looking covering.

Try the Phoenix Funstar. Great flying plane and hovers on a .46,. In the Modeltech range the Magic Extra is a nice plane, similar to the Sig Something Extra. Also the Excite 90 3D goes well.
