RE: GP DR-1 Fokker set up & sugestions?
I flew the Trip twice today before the winds came up. It really is a fun plane to fly and looks so beautiful in the air. I did my research and really have no trouble flying or landing the plane...
( I'm sure the day will come where I dork the wing tip... That's inevitable.)When the winds came up I put it up knowing the troubles. Only one guy around here owns one and he has tons of trouble flying it (never figured out how to use a rudder) and noses over evey time. So he only brings it out during show times and flys it once and puts it away. I love the thrill of puting on a show and love this plane. My whole hanger is planes that no one around here will fly. Biplanes / Gee Bee's / Stuka ect... Tomorrow I get to take out my Kyosha Gee Bee for the first time... Should be a thrill! I have a 120 sz Gee Bee already. I will send pics and video of the Fokker when I get them... Thank you all for your help with set up and Tecnique on flying this bird... Because of your help it was so much easier... Yea gotta love RC Universe!!!
Later all and send me the pics of yours...

Got 3 more flights on the Dr-1... What a great plane... Time to put the cowl on and finish the plane. Flew it without so it would be easier to change the settings.
Of the subject but flew my madien flight on the Kyosho Gee Bee also 2 flights everything went great... This forum makes those maiden flights so much eaiser if you just take the time to talk to people and set the planes up right! Talk about radicly different birds in the air... They are about as far opposite in the air as you can get... What a blast this is!

This may not be exactly the place to put it, but I didn't see anywhere else that looked relevant, and since the Dr.I WAS the last plane he flew....
I saw a good program on PBS last night about the Red Baron. All the balistic and forensic evidence sems to point to the fact that: Capt. Roy Brown, of the Canadian air corps, did NOT shoot down the Red Baron.
The fatal shot came from the right side of, and from behind and BELOW the Baron. Based on the amount of tissue damage, and the fact the the plane was flown in for a landing, the shot came from long range and no more than 30 seconds before touchdown.
Capt. Brown was behind, above, and to the LEFT of the Baron. He was also too close for the minimal amount of tissue damage revealed upon medical examination by British doctors. He also was not firing in the final seconds.
Only one person was firing at the Baron's plane from below, behind, the right side , and from the proper distance: An Australian machine gunner, Sgt. (I believe this was his name) Cedric Hopkins.
RIP, Mannfred.

Psst. Don't say this loud. The guys at my field think I must be really good to grease this one on.

I think they just assume it will be hard to handle because the size of the fuse and the staggerd wings make it look a lot more short coupled than it is. The staggered wings work like a wing with a low aspect ratio and wide chord. If you look at those models the leading edge is farther foward but the trailing edge is also further back, making the model appear short coupled. An exact copy of the full scale Dr-1 would be harder to land because the rudder is smaller and the wings undercambered. That would make cross wind landings even more difficult with a greater tendency to ballon on landing.

Hi guys, how do you think this plane would handle a zenoah G26? I hear it requires quite a bit of weight up front. A friend is going to give me a very low miliage plane with out engine and radio. The problem is a have been flying larger gasoline planes for so long I have no glow equipment or desire to get the greasy stuff on me. Any suggestions?

I put a magnum 91 4 stroke in mine and it balanced perfect... I think the gaser is going to be too heavy... But I'm not the expert on the plane I just finished mine and have only flown it 8 times.

LOL I put in a TT .91 which weighs about 2 ounces more and still had to put about 3/4 ounce on the firewall. Still a gasser weighs a lot more! The plane is just not as short coupled as it looks. It's just that the fuse is so wide it looks that way.

I wasn't thinking... With the 91 4stroke magnum I put a 2 oz brass prop nut on the front. BUt I also havn't run it with the cowl on yet and I painted that so with it on I should't need the brass nut.

In Model airplane news May 2003 Nick Ziroli reviewed the GP DR 1.
He has a great idea for shifting weight to the front of the plane. He made a small box on the firewall for the reciever battery. I plan on doing the same. Thinking of using an OS 7, I plan to follow his recommendations.

Had a few more flights on the Fokker. Saturday is the first fly-in I get to take it too. Been to two this yr and no one brought any Dr-1 Fokkers. Suppose to be good weather... 10 - 15 mile hr winds... but sunny and 80's Just hopeing for no big cross winds...
Never did get to paint it or recover... That will be the winter project... Just enjoying flying it right now.

RE: GP DR-1 Fokker set up & sugestions?
Hi - I flew my GP Dr1 this weekend for the first time. Maiden flight was on Saturday morning, Wind was calm until I was in the air and then a strong wind came up just after takeoff, and it was a Crosswind! Anyway I flew her pretty good and by the time the flight was over the wind was really blowing slightly cross the runway. I managed to bring her in with a perfect landing, without even a wing dip. Success! Today I flew her again and it was a less than perfect landing, the wing dipped a bit and I ran out of runway. No damage though! My family and friends were there to watch and I received alot of cheers! Great feeling and beautiful plane to fly! I have loved WW1 birds since I was a young boy! It’s great to finally see one of these birds in the air and actually fly one!

RE: GP DR-1 Fokker set up & sugestions?
I'm using a converted homelite 25cc gasser in mine and it took a bit of lead on the aft fuselage to balance it correctly. Also, I did manage to snap both sides of the bottom wing off on one sort of not so good landing, so I decovered the wing and added a strip of carbon fiber across the top and the bottom and now that wing is very strong. Carbon fiber is the ticket if you want to keep it together on those not so perfect landings.
