whoa - the Dave Patrick is much larger -and the weight difference is not that much- I have done both - with 3 lb gas engines - the DPatrick is much better for the larger engines

That's "third" for me.
And I just happen to have one available in RCU "For Sale" listings, both in Aerobatic and Giant Scale planes listing. It's the 26% size, RTF minus receiver.
Reason for selling? There's many other planes on the way for the 2004 building season, plus WRAM show, Toledo, Top Gun,...

I'm assuming the little H9.
Fourth vote for DP. It has all the "big plane" details like cowling tray, adjustable stab, two piece wing, and a big fat fuselage. I actually went with the DP Extra but took a good look at the DP and H9 540's.
If you go glow, the DP will be about 14lb. Not too much more than the H9.

My H9 edge weighed 12-1/2 lbs with an RCS 140 gas engine.
DP:
79" span --76.25 length --1200 sq. in.
H9:
78" span -- 68.5 length -- 1010 sq. in.

Well, I guess 1-1/2 pounds is quite a big difference. I suppose you could run the numbers a dozen different ways. I think the wing loading and power/weight ratio could come out pretty close depending on your assumptions.
Look at span vs. length. I'm not sure what it means, but it's quite a difference.

I had a H9 Edge and after getting a DP 330 I didn't even want to fly the H9 edge any more. The DP flys much lighter. The H9 will tip stall fairly hard. The DP Edge is about the same weight and wing area as the 330 so it should fly light to.

I currantly fly the DP 540T with a Moki 2.10. comes in @ 15 lbs. A beautiful flying machine. no bad habits at all. the firewall needs to be reinforced but thats about all. well built, looks great, light, and flies better than I expected. a good choice.

warren - I'm jealous. The only way I could get under 12 lb is if I removed my engine. I also have a single elevator servo with pull-pull, single aileron servos, standard size NiMH battery, etc. Pretty minimalistic by some standards. I'm still 14 lb.

Hmmm... I'll have to check and see. I am going by two friends that weighed theirs; one with an OS 1.60 just under 12, and one with a Moki 2.10 at 13.
I'll be putting mine together this weekend and will put it on the scale. DP says under 12 is do-able.

I don't know about the H9, but I have the Dave Patrick Edge 540 with a Moki 1.80 and it flyes like its on rails. My Edge is under 13 lbs as I used pull-pull controls on both the rudder and elevator.

Go with the DP. It has MUCH larger control surfaces realtive to the H-9. Wing area makes a big difference,even if the larger plane weighs more. Finish on the DP looks better, and the plane will more readily accept a larger engine. A 2.1 Moki or 2.8 gas engine will make this plane come alive. Or someweher in that engine area.

Get the Dave Patrick Edge540. I have one with a Moki 2.10 and it flys great! I have seen the Hangar 9 Edge and it seems to fly ok but the DP Edge looks bigger and seems to fly better Due I am sure to the additional 200 sq in of wing. Plus the DP Edge has a two piece wing which is a lot nicer than hauling around a 78" one piece wing. Go with the DP Edge you won't be sorry.

The model is well done and plenty strong for a 40 gasser but weight is 15 lbs - Batteries all forward the tube.
Still -the model has the classic tail heavy overrotation on low speed snaps.
I guess I am spoiled by lighter wing loadings, having done larger models with same engine at under 12 lbs (scratch built stuff).
It really is a nice model and ideally -if it had a lighter wing loading it would be a a great gas powered setup. This one is under 30 -by a little

Mark, I posted in the other section on your muffler selection. Did you use the 70 degree muffler on the moki or did you cut off the pipes and run flex?

Hmm... dont know. It was just the Bisson muffler I had the LHS get for me. The pipes shoot down and a little towards the back. I didn't use flex, but i did add an inch to them by putting on that blue exhaust tubing. Using that tubing, all the exhaust evacuates the cowl and is out in the airstream. The airplane is usually pretty "goo-free" at the end of the day.
Here's a pic of the slimline muffler I had on the 1.8 at one time. It got replaced by a new Bisson. The slimline and the bisson were configured almost exactly the same.
