I attempted several times to contact Dave about a engine question for this plane. Seems nobody at Dave Patrick can answer my question of whether a twin engine will fit inside the cowl. If anyone has this plane or know's the answer I would appreciate it. You would think one person over at Dave Patrick would know the answer besides Dave himself who is hard to get in touch with. Thank's for your help. John

I looked at this plane at the IMS show in Ontario, Ca. and liked it so much I ordered one while I was there. I was told these won't be out until March but I won't be surprised if that doesn't happen. The engine they had in that plane on display was I believe a YS140. IT just barely fit inside the cowl and looked like the valve cover was rubbing on it. An OS 120 or Saito 120 should fit with no problem so I would bet a twin 160 would not be a problem. I'm sure you can get the dimensions for the 160 twin easily enough and compare the head height to that of a 120 single.

If you want the sound of a twin you might consider one of the Saito in-line twins. Should fight nicely in the cowl and give you the sound/power you desire.

You just read my mind. I'm thinking of putting that engine in the Speedster. If it works, I will put it in the PA-18. The Speedster is due here on Wed.

John Redsox,
If the production models end up just like the prototype that I saw, you're really going to like the Super Cub........a lot. The asking price isn't cheap, but the details are really good, especially considering it's an ARF. I don't believe any of the other 1/4 scale Cub ARF's out there now are finished this well. Almost all of the hardware looks useable except the foam wheels they will supply, nor does it come with a fuel tank or spinner.
Is the Speedster you are ordering from Kange?

Dan,
I have the same thoughts about the PA-18. I just hope everything is in the box when it get's here. I've read more sotries about his bad customer service etc and I just hope I don't end up being a DPM basher.
Yes the Speedster is from Kange. Everyone has Cub's at the field so I thought I would be a bit different. A person at Chief said the picture does not do it justice. I'm excited and it should be here on Wed or at least that is what Fedex says. I'm going over in my head what engine to put in it. Small gas, or a big 4 stroker. I thought of a ZDZ 40 but the wings will rip off at full power. Then I thought of a small Brisson but I don' t know enough about them. Then the Saito inline twin came up and now wondering if that will fit in the cowl. Tough making judgments about engines when you don't have the cowl. I'm not a fan of the Saito 180, too much vibration. I had two of them and never liked them. Should be interesting and most likely I'll have a headach trying to decide.

JOHN REDSOX,
That twin Saito you mention would be ideal if it fits. Is it possible for you to post some pics when you get your hands on it? I've read good things about their Monocoupe and hope the Speedster is at the same quality level.
Tailspin,
When I spoke to Dave patrick at the IMS show, the Super Cub he's selling is modelled after a full scale version located in Alaska. The real one is one of the late production versions Piper built. It actually has corrugated metal flaps and has a high gloss finish which allowed the use of Ultracoat instead of fabric covering on the model. I know their are probably more paint schemes that could have been chosen, but the yellow is probably the easiest and less costly version to do.

Dan-
I will put some pic's on when the plane comes in and also the stages of how the pane builds. I wish I knew whether the Saito engine fit becasause there was one for sale on RCU for $600.00 NIB. I missed out. Talk to you soon.

From whai I understand it's ultracoat...now I need to find what paint is compatible with ultracoat as I want to trim mine in metallic blue but ultracoat paint doesn't make metallic.

I spoke with Dave at the Wrams show. Reason behind the Ultracote is so it looks better longer than fabric. He has a YS 140 in his, and said a saito 120 just fits in it. The plane was fantastic looking, by far the best cub ready to go on the market.

A properly done cub in fabric will look like ultracoat...here's a picture of a real cub someone had posted in another forum, looks like ultracoat to me.
