Hi!

Do you think that the GBY smaller version span 2080 mm could work with a OSFT300. Therefore in Austria I could get the smaller version about 250 EUR it is a occasion-price, the bigger would coast 490 EUR, and I want do use my OS in then next time.

Is the fuselage ok for this dimension of engine, especially the firewall.
Thanks for your help

Yea, I thought so....but the "little" 64cc engine only swings a 20/8 prop i think, and that is not much for a 250cm large plane :-)
According to Pe Reivers, in my thread about the ASP 400, he ran a 24x10 prop at around 6000 rpm.

The cowl on the 208cm version is 250mm wide. It would be noseheavy with the big twin, but you could move the batteries to the rear to help with the balance.

Has anyone installed and flown this bird with Saito 180? Any suggestions on where to find this bird other than Pacific?

The 82" version flies great on a 180! That's what the factory prototypes used. Not unlimited vertical, but nice big loops are easy. Sounds good too.

Thanks JRF What about Futaba 3305s all around except for throttle? Just bought a new Futaba 9c Super came with digitals (low torque) ???????

The 3151s are 43 oz servos. Just to be safe, you should probably use 60 oz servos on all of the flying surfaces. 3305s (100 oz) would be totally wasted unless you're planning on doing a lot of 3D with your GBY.

Can somebody do me a huge favor by digging up your manual and telling me the recommended CG? I'm getting mine back in flying condition and can't find the manual. Thanks! -Andy

If you put it at 28% of the wing chord at the side of the fuselage you will be fine.

Flyerman, I've been using Futaba 3305's but I was curious why Tower's tech dept says not for aircraft use. I called Futaba and they said the 3305 servo does not have vibration protection incorporated in them and you fly at your own risk. Now I just use them for rudder / tailwheel steering.

I am interested in building the 27% paca geeBee (250cm), but I am hésitating between a nice (but heavy) radial motor like the SEIDEL ST710 (2,7kg) and a light 50cc single cylinder 4 stroke that will weight much less (1,6 kg).

So my question is : what is the perfect engine weight to avoid any "balancing weight" in the tail (when the motor is too heavy) or in the nose.

Many thanks for your advices.

The one I flew had a G-62 in it. (82 Oz with muffler) and it had two 8 oz batteries mounted in the fuselage just in front of the stabilizer. I don't think it had any other balancing weight in it. I would guess that 70 to 75 ounces (about 2-2.1 kg) would be about perfect for the engine, using normal size batteries in the usual position. (Engine weight including muffler, mount, ignition and battery.)

so, this mean that a seidel 2,7 kgmotor will need a LOT of weight for balancing []

so I need now to find a 2 Kg motor that

1- use little oil (I don't want any of those messy motor that need 18% oil + Nitro ), and
2- has a NICE SOUND (so supposively a 4 stroke, and may be multicylinder !) ???

any idea ?

PAC replied to my email this morning... the CG on the 82" model is 4.5" from the leading edge. Posted here just in case anybody else ever needs this info (its nowhere in the threads). 28% would have been close ( 4.13" ) .

I've had a RCS 140 (26cc gas) and a ZDZ 40cc on the 82", now its sporting a OS 160FX. I went from tailheavy with the RCS140 to nose heavy with the ZDZ40... and now even more tailheavy with the 160FX. Moving things around kept the amount of lead necessary down to a couple ounces. As a general rule, it's usually easier to correct a nose heavy plane than a tail heavy one, but lighter planes fly better than heavier ones.

I have had one of the earlier models for several years now. One TOUGH plane! Very heavy duty. Well made but do not set your elevator to factory specs of 3/4". If you get into any trouble low and slow with that setting you are toast.

I must say that I just had some dealings with Jim at Pacific Aeromodels and I am VERY IMPRESSED! After dealing with the "folks" at Great Planes it was refreshing to talk to someone who knew what they were talking about. I got a new Bee Bee"Y" 1.20 for Christmas and don't have that many flights on it and was having some problems. JIM IS THE MAN! Instant replacement of the defective part and a real concern for my satisfaction. I have had one of these planes for over 3 years and have many, many hours on my old one before it went the way of all good planes and low and behold I missed it enough to get another. The covering is GREAT, the way the engine is offset is GREAT, the way it flies is GREAT and above all else the customer service is FANTASTIC! I did not have to spend hours and hours to TRY to get the covering to look decent (I HATE MONOKOTE!) it was tight right out of the box and was very well packed & complete. These planes cost a little more than some others but they are worth it! All you remember is what a great plane it is instead of how it cost a few dollars more than the "others". I JUST CAN'T SAY ENOUGH GOOD THINGS ABOUT JIM, PACIFIC AERO & THIS GEE BEE! Give it a try and you won't be sorry. Remember: "The bitterness of low quality outlast's the sweetness of low cost.

Well stated. I got one of these in a trade that was only flown one or two times. It has an RCS 180 and I'm very pleased with it. I changed out the 2-56 pushrods, did some cosmetic things and added a pilot, and she was ready. Looks great in the air and a pure joy to fly, AND LAND.. Take offs are sweet as well as it rolls down the runway in that Gee Bee tail high posture on those big gear. I love it. Here she is on the way out and then back in from my maiden flight.

Hi there,

looks like it is really enough. I wondered, too, about that low elevator travel, but reduced mine to about 1" now and 30% exponential. The Gee Bee is amazingly direct on elevator input. C/G needs to be in correct place, of course.

n27sr,

no it is double that, +/- 1" - or at least about that, I did not measure. I never needed full elevator travel so far for the Gee Bee, but I always like to have some kind of "reserve" on my planes.

I've been flying a lot of the areobatic type planes for a while , and now i have a desire to get one of the 27% Gee Bee's as well. I'm going to be ordering mine probably within about a month and am planning on putting a modified Zenoah G-62 up front. It calls for that anyways for one of the biggest motors. I think it'll be a good fit. New lightened up G-62 will weigh just a hair over 4 lbs. I've been talking back and forth with Ralph Cunningham on doing the modified motor , and he thinks it'll be a good match as well. I don't know what it is about this Gee bee , but i can't wait to get my hands on one.

I was kind of hoping there we're some guys on here from RCU that had built the same bird.....but they are hard to find. seems like the smaller 82" gee bee was really popular though........looks to be a fun plane.
