You can do it either way. Depends on whether you think you might ever need the original legs.

Another thing you may want to take into consideration is the wheel pants. On my 97-in version, when I replaced the wire gear with oleo struts, I had to use a new set of wheel pants that were two piece that slid inside of each other for the oleo strut action.

Dear Kartman24
I still drive my GeeBee.
It is a first-generation model with a rigid train. Since this one is not strong enough, I made a New train with 3/16 piano wire.
In order to mitigate the bounce during landing, i am replaced the wheels with 5-inch inflatable DU-BRO wheels. With 4 psi of air in the tires, it works very well.
My GeeBee is equipped with a Saito FA-170R3 engine with a CH Ignitions. He is still one of my favorite planes to fly.

Is it the 82 in or 97-in version? Both of them are great flying planes.

GI Jon, it is the 82" version. Does not look like it has ever been out of the box.

It's a great flying airplane. I powered mine with a 3W24. I think it would do well with a DLE20 or maybe even a 30.
