Hi all...Ive got myself an BH extra and running it with a 46fx and was wondering does any one else have this type of set up? The balance point is set at the middle of the recomended range of 110mm back from the LE and at about 1/2 throttle doing circuts it looks like it is dragging its tail a bit in the banked turns,(im not into 3d stuff yet, cant fly that good)should i try moving the CG a bit more to the front? Flying at full throttle it flys like a bullet. Also the manual says i should have 15mm of throw for the elevators, does this sound like to much for a 46 size extra as it feels realy snappy to elevator input.Plus any tips on landing these small extras as ive only had 3 flys of it so far and they have all been pretty close calls and our grass strip isnt really that long..Thanks guys and keep up the good work RCU ..Very cool site.

Darran ... the Extra 300 is the best of all the BH acrobatic planes, best as in RELATIVE! My friend got one and it sucks with a .46 engine, sucks as in there is not enough power to pull out of anything more that simple loops etc. Its not under powered but you do not have much in reserve at all. The planes are not built with consistency, some are heavy and some are lighter. The one my friend got was tail heavy and he had to add 14 oz to the nose. The plane crashed after a few flights, did not have enough power or altitude to pull out of a loop. You sure it flies like a bullet? Hehehe ...
I believe a lot of people have stated that the BH CG point is inaccurate, try moving it a little forward and see what happens. By the way what is the dry weight of your plane? Tanks.

Hi tIANci
What i ment to say is that at full throttle itll go where i point it, not dragging its tail..
14oz added to the nose sounds like a hell of alot of extra weight to add.I didnt need to add any to mine as it was spot on but im going to try it a bit farther faward for the next flight, doyou think going to 95mm from LE is going to be ok?
I think this plane would be better with say the ringed 50 in it, like you say its not realy a record braker in a straight line..
Id like to know the weight of it as well so ill have to weight it later when i work on it. You dont know the weight of your friends plane by any chance?

Just finished playing with it and moved the CG to about 95-100mm from the LE and it weighs 2.55 kgs or about 5.6 lbs thats with the wheel pants on ready to fly with out fuel...
Quiet happy about the weight but id like to weigh it on a better set of scales just to make sure..
I also added blue stripes to the bottom of the wing , didnt like the stars, makes it a bit more visable...
Any way going to fly it tomorrow after work ill let you know how it went..

The blue stripes look great ... waiting to hear from you soon. I have a BH Sukhoi 40 and I wonder when I will have the guts to commit hara-kiri ... LOL!

Went flying this morning...What a blast, it is so much nicer having a plane go where you point it( its my second plane from a trainer)Had to remove the wheel pants ,as after the storm on thursday afternoon the strip was pretty water loged..
Flew much better with the CG at 95 mm but i think it should come back to about 100, was a bit nose heavy this time, needed to ad nearly full back trim for level flight. Rolls are fairly quick, loops a bit oval shaped with the 46 running out of puff at the top.Running a APC 11X6 prop today but was going to try a 12.25X3.75 on it but ran out of fuel so will have to wait for the next time out for the new prop.
tIANci , how does the sukui fly? A friend of mine is going to buy one next week, is there any problems with that plane?

You are going to put in the 3D prop ... well why not. That will give you more torque on such a heavy plane. I am tempted but I shall resist getting another plane ...
DO NOT buy the BH Sukhoi ... its really bad news from what I hear. I know the assistant at the LHS that distributes BH models. He has flown a few SU 31 and he says it flies decently on a 46 but much better with something more and that the SU 31 is a real b*tch during take off (snaking about) and landings (a little hot). Get the Phoenix ... if your friend is so taken in by the looks. They both look the same but one is better. I will probably start to fix up my SU 31 this week and see what happens ... need to check CG and all ... the plane is tail heavy so I will put in a TT 61 to balance things out, also that will mean I do not need to add so much dead weight. I took out the pilot and put in a nice little Winnie the Pooh ... wait till you see her!

My friend trashed his, the engine was not properly tuned and the plane was not able to pull out of a dive. It took him 2 hard steps to break the fuse! The plane is strong. I am gonna fly my BH Sukhoi 31 and if that crashes (of which I am expecting) I will definately get the Extra 300, that plane flies decently enough from what I saw.

Vortec, sorry to see that pic.
I had the BH extra before, was running it with a TT46PRO, was a nice flier, but not really great on aerobatics. Then I tired the 12/25x3.75 prop. WOW!!!! Knife edge was a breeze, it just became a different plane altogether. Unfortunately I crashed mine some time back. If you do use the 12.25x3.75 prop, just remember that you have to hold the throttle open a little for landings as this is a slow speed prop. But the increase in thrust makes aerobatics so much more fun and easier.

Woooow ... now I am thinking an Extra 300/Sukhoi 31 with a TT61 and a 3D prop ... hmmmmmm ... something like a 14x4, most interesting.

Yeah i tryed the 12.25x3.75 prop and the plane was like it was something else...It had more speed than the 11x6 i was using and was going to try a 11x5 but she hit the ground..wing is good to go again but the rest is in the bin,the wing only came apart where the epoxy was(it ripped 1 layer of ply apart)and it was a clean break.
The crash came from a straight down continual snap roll and got a bit low to the ground and pulled a bit more elevator on to get it up but it just made it snap more and in she went at about 3/4 throtle...Dont have any more 12.25x3.75 props at the LHS eighter..

My Feedback: (9)
i wouldn't put a 13x4 prop on a 46fx. you will overload the engine and overheat easily. the biggest i put on my 46fx was a 12x5, which was on my funtana. now i have a os .70 surpass with a 13x4w on it, good combo. I had good results with the 11x5 on my 46fx also. anything above a 12x5 on the 46fx is just going to give problems. the engine wont run in the correct RPM range. If your going to get another plane, you may want to try a different engine, it sounds like from the posts you guys put the .46 just ain't enough. good luck and happy flying!
